Halloween Week: A Spooktacular Sketch with Marsha Farris

Hey, Elle’s Studio friends! It’s Marsha here with you today, and I’m excited to share a fabulous sketch and my frightfully fun Halloween layout based on it!  I love working with sketches, and, when they are paired with Halloween documenting, they are even more fun! This week’s sketch features a grid design, and I thought it would be perfect for documenting a Halloween memory from last year.

Here’s a look at the layout I created based on the sketch:

Supplies | October 2020 Kit, Jewel Journaling Tags, Halloween Journaling Tags, October Labels, Thankful Chipboard Label Stickers, Candy Corn Puffy Alphabet Stickers, Halloween Puffy Stickers, Autumn Wood Veneers, Acetate Stars, Autumn Days 6 x 8.5 Inch Paper Stack, Medium Jane Alphabet Stamp — Solid, Shine Brighter Stamp, Hazel Alphabet Stamp

For my project today, I chose to adapt the sketch from a 12″ x 12″ layout to a traveler’s notebook spread. By condensing the grid design of the sketch and dividing it down the middle, it was perfect to use for a TN layout!

I followed the sketch and added the title at the top left of the spread. I used a Jewel Journaling Tag and letter stickers from the Halloween Puffy Stickers, replacing the “O” with one of the cute jack-o-lantern stickers from the same sticker sheet. To complete the title, I stamped the word “fun” onto a star patterned paper from the Autumn Days Paper Stack using black ink and the solid Medium Jane Alphabet Stamp. I trimmed out the letters individually and used my sewing machine to stitch them onto the page. I love the extra texture this adds!

I used two journaling tags from the October Kit and machine stitched around three of the sides to create a mini pocket. To embellish it, I added a little row of pumpkins using the Halloween Puffy Stickers and Autumn Wood Veneers.  Using white cardstock, I created a tag to tuck into the pocket and added the word “boo” with the Candy Corn Puffy Alphabet Stickers. I stamped the date with black ink and the Hazel Alphabet Stamp.

I continued to follow the sketch and added my photo to the top right portion of the spread. A black dotted patterned paper from the Autumn Days Paper Stack was perfect for layering behind the photo to provide some contrast against the white cardstock background.  I stamped the word “happy” from the Shine Brighter Stamp onto a die cut tab from the October Kit and layered it over one of the October Labels. I also added a speech bubble sticker from the Halloween Puffy Stickers and a label from the Thankful Chipboard Label Stickers.

Below the photo, I added typed journaling strips onto a tag from the Halloween Journaling Tags. To complete the layout, I machine stitched Acetate Stars onto a few areas of the spread and stamped little clusters of stars and dots using black ink the Shine Brighter Stamp. I love how this followed the star design found on the sketch.

I hope I have inspired you to create a project based on this fun sketch—whether its a layout, traveler’s notebook or card! Be sure to share your creations with us in our Elle’s Studio Facebook Group or on Instagram using the hashtag #EllesStudio. We can’t wait to see your interpretation!

Halloween Week: A Frightfully Fun Mini Album with Patricia Roebuck

Hi, Elle Studio friends! Every year since we adopted our daughter, I have made a Halloween album. I love documenting the season and especially love the products that spark creativity and make albums come together so quickly.  I will walk you through how this mini album came together in just one evening using the current October Kit and extras, as well as some Halloween treats from the shop!

Supplies | October 2020 KitOctober 2020 Cut Files, Happy Halloween Stickers, Thankful Chipboard Label Stickers, Autumn Tiny Shapes and Dots Puffy Stickers, Halloween Puffy StickersFuchsia Puffy Alphabet Stickers, Navy Puffy Alphabet Stickers, Candy Corn Puffy Alphabet StickersAcetate Stars, Acrylic Leaves, Halloween Acrylic Treats, Autumn Days 6 x 8.5 Inch Paper Stack, Documented Stamp, Winifred Alphabet Stamp, Mini Days of the Week Stamp, Large Jane Number Metal Die

The cover and the base pages of my album are all from the Autumn Days Paper Stack. After deciding on how many photos to include in my album, I went through the paper stack and selected not just Halloween colors, but neutral and fun colors that would complement costumes or create a beautiful fall contrast to my photos. I trimmed all of my pages to 4 1/4″ x 6. To add the year to my front cover, I used the Large Jane Number Metal Die, and then clustered with an Acetate Star and a Happy Halloween Sticker.  I had two Halloween Acrylic Treat bones that were perfect adhered to my cover.

The first inside page is seen through my cover, so I used the Winifred Alphabet Stamp to stamp “Happy Halloween” in grey ink, then placed and adhered the two Halloween Acrylic Treat candies so that they could be seen through the cover. A quick way to put together a mini album is to create repetition and a pattern throughout the pages. I chose to make the left side of each spread the white backside of the patterned paper and the right patterned paper. On each white backside, I used the Documented Stamp to create horizontal lines in a pale peach color, and then used the Winifred Alphabet Stamp to add “Happy Halloween.”

On the right side, a 3″ x 4″ photo tops the patterned paper, then half of a pinked circle from the October 2020 Cut Files, cut in half. I altered the placement of the half pinked circle on each page just to add a little interest. I chose the patterned paper color for the cut file to complement my photo and patterned paper background.

Depending on each photo, I used a combination of October 2020 Kit die cuts, the Acetate Stars, Acrylic Leaves, Autumn Tiny Shapes and Dots Puffy Stickers, Happy Halloween Stickers, puffy alpha stickers, in Fuchsia and Navy, and especially the wonderful Candy Corn Puffy Alphabet Stickers, as well as the Halloween Puffy Stickers. For this page, I used the Mini Days of the Week Stamp to add the ‘th’ after the 11.

Another element I repeated throughout the pages was adding black machine stitching around each page. Once my pages were prepped and I had my products and photos ready, I continued with the design of a 3″ x 4″ photo and added a cluster of embellishments to fit that photo. In some cases, like this page, I didn’t match my photo, but I used green, blue, black and white.  It works well with the neutral colors of the photo!

This page is a perfect example of complementing the photo with products. I pulled out the puffy alphas in a combination of colors to go with my photo, along with the Acrylic Leaf, Acetate Stars, Autumn Tiny Shapes and Dots Puffy Stickers, and the Halloween Puffy Stickers.

I am so happy to find a perfect spot for the Halloween Puffy Stickers on this page along with those wonderful Acetate Stars!

As well as having a repeated pattern for creating each page, creating with the products I selected made this come together so quickly and gave me the creativity to also make each page unique.

Pull out your Elle’s Studio Puffy Alphabet Stickers!  They added fun personality to this Halloween Puffy Sticker and photo.

I may have hoarded these little ghosts from the Halloween Puffy Stickers, but I am glad I did, because this was the photo to add them to!

I used the Cinch tool to bind my album, but you could just punch holes and use rings or even ribbon to bind the pages. Whether you document Halloween by the year, or even group the years together to document in one album, start by choosing a design for the base pages to create repetition throughout each page, select your Elle’s Studio products that are versatile for your photos, and you will not only love your completed mini album, but you will enjoy putting it together! Definitely “big smiles for this!”

Halloween Week Day Three: A Terrifyingly Terrific Traveler’s Notebook with Stacie Watson

Hey, hey scrappy friends! It’s Stacie with you today to share some more Halloween inspiration during Halloween Week here on the Elle’s Studio blog! Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year and we are halfway through spooky season right now! Whether or not you’re all about the creepy and kooky or the cute, the October kit and add-ons have you covered.

Supplies | Neutral Die Cut Labels, Happy Halloween Stickers, Halloween Puffy Stickers, Autumn Tiny Shapes and Dots Puffy Stickers, Acetate Stars, Autumn Days 6 x 8.5 Inch Paper Stack, Jewel Polka Dot 6 x 8.5 Inch Paper Stack, Documented Stamp, Winifred Alphabet Stamp

Traveler’s notebooks are a great way to tell short stories in a simple and quick manner. That’s exactly how this spread came together—quick and simple. I started out by creating mini tags from the Autumn Days and Jewel Polka Dot Paper Stack in colors that scream Halloween. I knew I wanted to use stickers from the Halloween Puffy Stickers and Happy Halloween Stickers to embellish the tags. Stickers are one of the easiest ways to add fun to your spreads!

Oh, the Winifred Alphabet Stamp! Need I say more? I love this alphabet stamp (and the name!) so of course I had to use it on my spread. I stamped out “Boo!” and “EEK!” onto white cardstock with black ink and fussy cut around them. I love how they seem to just pop of the page. To finish off the mini tags, I decided to add some of the Acetate Stars to the tops instead of bakers twine.

On the right side of the spread, I used the “Happy Halloween” from the Halloween Puffy Stickers and put those on first, then I printed out my photos to the size that would fit in the middle between the words. I added a label from the Neutral Die Cut Labels behind one of the photos, then did some stamping using the Documented Stamp. To finish off the spread, I added some stars and dots from the Autumn Tiny Shapes and Dots Puffy Stickers and then called it done.

This spread came together super quickly and I love the mini tags with the embellishments! I hope this inspires you to create some spooky and kooky or cute Halloween spreads of your own with your October kit and add-ons. Thanks so much for stopping by the blog today!

Halloween Week: Bootiful Greeting Cards with Nathalie Leonelli

Welcome to day two of our Halloween Week here on the Elle’s Studio blog! This is Nathalie and I am here to share two new greeting cards created with the October kit and extras. Keeping your distance this year for Halloween? Send a cute card instead!

Supplies | October 2020 KitHappy Halloween Stickers, Thankful Chipboard Label Stickers, Acetate Stars, Jewel Polka Dot 6 x 8.5 Inch Paper Stack, Medium Jane Alphabet Stamp — OutlineMedium Jane Alphabet Stamp — Solid

For both cards, I used patterns from the super versatile Jewel Polka Dot Paper Stack as my background. I also picked two tags from the October 2020 Kit for each of them, taking full advantage of their individual patterns.

This first one features three groupings consisting of stickers from the Happy Halloween Stickers on top of colored cardstock from my stash, layered on Acetate Stars. The sentiment, also from the Happy Halloween Stickers, was first placed on white cardstock then hand cut to make it pop. Foam squares  also added depth.

Already a fan of the Large Jane alphabet stamps, I was delighted to find them in a medium size in the October release! I used both the Solid and the Outline sets on my second card.

I built my sentiment mixing stamping and the perfect piece from the Thankful Chipboard Label Stickers on top of a tag. The Acetate Stars bring just a bit of “nightly” touch.

I must add that, always a great resource, PageMaps sketches found in the Fall issue of Scrapbook & Cards Today Magazine inspired me in the design of both of these cards!

Don’t forget to stop by every day this week for more fun Halloween projects from my teammates! Happy Halloween to all!

Halloween Week: Treat Boxes with Amy Jo Vanden Brink

We are so excited you are joining us today for day one of Halloween Week here on the Elle’s Studio blog! Halloween is such a fun holiday, with so many creative possibilities—from costumes to decorations… and papercrafting! This week you’ll find five different posts to inspire you: from treats to layouts. Today we’re kicking off the week with design team member Amy Jo Vanden Brink and some amazing treats!

Hello! I’m so excited to be back on the blog today to share how I’m preparing for the most fun holiday of the year: Halloween! I love the great color combinations that go along with Halloween! For my project today, I chose to create treat boxes to hand out at our Halloween party. These can be made for pre-wrapped treats as well.

Supplies | October 2020 Kit, Jewel Journaling Tags, October Labels, Autumn Tiny Shapes and Dots Puffy Stickers, Candy Corn Puffy Alphabet Stickers, Acetate Stars, Halloween Acrylic Treats, Autumn Days 6 x 8.5 Inch Paper Stack

Other | Cellophane bags, ribbon, brads, Scotch Tape, 1/8″ hole punch

To make the boxes, I simply folded the paper three times, with the final seam the two ends of the paper taped together at the back. I put scoring marks at 1.25 inches, then at 3 inches, another 1.25 inches (and depending on how accurate I was with the measuring) again at 3, if needed. This should give you a very small tab to tape to the other end of your paper after folding.

Before I folded & taped them closed, I punched a hole at the top center of one of the larger panels so that I could attach name tags to the box. Then, I taped down the side seam to create a box that was open at both ends.

I constructed the tags separately and hole punched them all at once so that I could attach them with a brad at the top of each bag. To make them all match, I followed a little formula and layered them in the following order, bottom to top: journaling tags from the October 2020 Kit and Jewel Journaling Tags, cut into a tag shape at the top and trimmed down on the sides about an inch; 2.5 inch circle of Autumn Days 6 x 8.5 Inch Paper Stack paper; Acetate Star; October Label; name spelled with Candy Corn Puffy Alphabet Stickers.

I added extra embellishments with the Autumn Tiny Shapes and Dots Puffy Stickers and the cute little Halloween Acrylic Treats. I used adhesive to keep all the layers together, then I hole-punched them and used a brad to attach them to the boxes. To keep the whole set looking cohesive, I tried to stick with my purple, turquoise, orange and yellow color scheme, with the grey and black as neutrals.

The cellophane bags were taped into the boxes on the bottom seam of the bag, about a half inch from the bottom, then filled with popcorn and tied with a black and white striped ribbon. My family has been begging to dig into the snacks already, so hopefully they will make it to the party in a couple of weeks, but if they don’t, I’ll just refill them!

This was an easy way to use some great patterned papers that have a very festive look and great impact on your holiday table! I hope I inspired you to dig into your supplies to make your Halloween festive!

To celebrate our big stamp sale, lets take a look at some of our favorite stamps in the shop, and how our talented design team members used them:

Alphabet | Our Large Jane Alphabet Stamps are our tried-and-true large alphabet in the shop! We love the creative ways our team uses the outline stamp with the different textured alphas to go inside, creating a different look on each and every project! At the top, we love how Marsha stamped the Large Jane Outline Alphabet letters first on die cuts using our Banners Metal Die, then using the Large Jane Polka Dot Alphabet Stamp in beautiful colors to fill in the letters and match her spread! Below Marsha’s project, we have Steph’s amazing spread, featuring her BIG title! She used the Large Jane Polka Dot and Large Jane Stripes Alphabet first before using the Large Jane Alphabet Metal Die to die cut her letters, leaving a fun white shadow. There are so many creative possibilities available with this selection of alphabets—and don’t forget the numbers, too!

Titles | We have four awesome volumes of our popular Title Builder Stamps available in the shop, and each have been designed to help you mix and match words and phrases to create amazing titles! Meghann, the creator behind Title Builder, shows off the Title Builder Vol. 4 Stamp here on this colorful layout! The mix of different fonts and colors creates one eye-catching title. Each volume comes with a list of title possibilities to take the guesswork out of your creative time, but combine the four stamps together and your title possibilities are endless!

Tabs | We love tabs, and that they can be used as a functional part of your design—to pull out a hidden photo or tag, or purely for embellishment! We have two different tab stamps in our shop: the Everyday Tabs Stamp and the Springtime Tabs Stamp. Both of these offer tabs to stamp and words and phrases to fill in the space on the tab! Plus, both coordinate perfectly with our Everyday Tabs Metal Die, making it quick and easy to cut out and add to your page. Above, you can see how our guest Lorilei Murphy used our Springtime Tabs Stamp in a rainbow of colors, and paired it with our popular Typewriter Alphabet Stamp to create a fun list of currents! Her project shows how fun tabs can be!

Lists | We love a list—whether we use it to cross off things we have accomplished or add quick and easy journaling to a project. Our List Stamp, featured by Katarina above, includes a 1-10 list and different words and phrases to add above it. We love how Katarina used it here, adding color to the number circles. Whether you’re recording your “currents” list, or jotting down priorities for the day, the List Stamp will help you to start that list on any project!

Journaling | Don’t you just hate it when your journaling isn’t straight? We have several great journaling stamps in the shop to help you get those important details on your project in a neat way! At the top, Suzanna shows us how she used the dashed lines from our Shine Brighter Stamp along the right side of her page, and added those sweet little stars for embellishment using the same stamp! We love it when a stamp does double-duty! Below, Stacie created colorful lines from the Noted Vol. 2 Stamp for her journaling and coordinated that with our puffy alphabet stickers. She also used the dots from our Months of the Year Stamp to add an extra touch to these custom journaling tags!

Labels | Labels can be used for SO many different things: from journaling to added layers! We just love how Nathalie used our Labels Stamp and Labels Metal Die here on this holiday project to create an interactive advent calendar! Stamping these labels in different festive colors, sizes and shapes, and topping them with puffy alphabet and number stickers or embellishments creates the perfect embellishment for any project, at any season!

Embellishment | Stamps can create fun embellishments on a page, and our Sunshine & Laughter Stamp certainly adds fun here on this layout by Katarina! She used the rainbow design along the left side of the page, coordinating their colors with our puffy alphabet stickers. She also created a fun border of tiny shapes along the bottom and right sides of the layout using the same stamp, and stamped “a happy birthday” underneath her photo. This stamp includes so many different elements that can add details both big and small to your project!

Dates | Last, but certainly not least, is our lineup of date stamps: our original Dated Stamp, it’s little brother, Mini Dated, the follow-up to that, Mini Dated Extras, and our newest in the family, the Mini Dated Extras Stamp.
