“Inspired By” with Neela Nalam

Inspiration can come from everywhere, but we especially love being inspired by the awesome projects created by our design team each month in the Design Team Inspiration gallery posts. Today, Neela Nalam was inspired by fellow teammate Susan Brochu, and we love how she made her page her own! Let’s take a look:

It’s Neela here, and this month I was very inspired by Susan Brochu’s “Good Eats” layout with the little envelope in the corner of the layout and the photos spilling out of it:

I loved the original idea so much and I am glad to have the opportunity to scrap lift this awesome layout!

For my layout, I changed up the size to be 9″ x 12″ instead of 12″ x 12″ and I to punched all of my photos into two inch circles. Here is my layout:

I decided to document the month of March so far. Not much of it has gone by, but a lot is happening. So it was fun to put all the details in this layout. I used the March Labels as little journaling tags for each of the photos. I wanted the layout to be an explosion of color and the Rainbow Acrylic was perfect for that. The labels and the Little Acrylic Hearts helped spread the color across the layout too.

I also punched a few butterflies from the 3″ x 4″ rainbow striped journaling tag and added them to the layout, and sprinkled Enamel Dots for some texture and color. I added a wood veneer bunny because we have these brown bunnies running around in our backyard at this time. I balanced it with two more Wood Weneer Icons.

The Big Moment Phrase Stickers were perfect for this spread: both the colors and the phrases. I added them alongside the photos as they helped me convey my message perfectly.

Thank you Susan for the wonderful inspiration!

Everyday Life in Color with Candace Perkins

Everyday moments can be documented in a snap with our new March kit and extras, and today we have Candace Perkins sharing how she documented hers in a colorful and beautiful way! Let’s take a look:

Hello friends! It’s Candace here again to share a fun pocket page spread using the March 2018 Kit. I am so in love with all the colors in this month’s kit. You can’t help but smile when you see the tags and embellishments. It was so fun to work with the rainbow of colors and it made all the colors in my photos pop!

Supplies | March 2018 KitHeart of Gold Chipboard StickersHappy Moments StampAll the Details Stamp

I like the balance of black and white photos along with colorful photos and tags that bring the whole spread to life.

I love the new All the Details Stamp! It is perfect for my weekly title cards. I mixed the stamped sentiment with a label marking the dates of the week. With a few chipboard embellishments from the Heart of Gold Chipboard Stickers, my title tag was perfect!

My favorite tag in the whole spread is the adorable 3″ x 4″ rainbow tag from the March 2018 Kit. The gold heart was a perfect neutral contrast to all the colors in the rainbow.

I love this days of the week tag from the March Kit. I like being able to give a quick snapshot of our activities for the week. This tag is great when you have lots of photos, but not a lot of space to add journaling.

To add consistency across the spread I added another gold heart from the Heart of Gold Chipboard Stickers on the right side of the spread. This chipboard is so versatile!

Using the Happy Moments Stamp, I stamped and cut out the “this is a story about” sentiment in pigment ink. Next, I used dimensional adhesive to pop up the sentiment and bring attention to the tag.

I loved this 4″ x 6″ tag from the kit, but I wanted to add just a bit more detail. I used the awesome Heart of Gold Chipboard Stickers again to add the “XO” and another gold heart.

The whole spread came together in a snap with the bright, bold colors and fun embellishments. I would love to see how you use this month’s kit in your pocket page spreads!

Thanks for stopping by! Have a beautiful day.

Pocket Pages + Prompts with Nathalie Leonelli

Our design team member Nathalie Leonelli is a pro at getting creative in her pockets, and today, she’s sharing fresh inspiration with us using the March 2018 Kit and add-ons, PLUS some fun ideas and prompts for switching things up in your pockets! Have a look, and take her challenge below!

Every month I am in love with the colors in the exclusive kits and the March 2018 Kit is no exception! For this new pocket page spread in my 2018 album (which I started late!), I decided to go with a soft palette of grey, lavender and light blue, allowing my photos to capture the eye first.

Supplies | March 2018 Kit, 2018 CalendarsDays of the Week Chipboard Stickers, Puffy Star Stickers, White Puffy Alphabet Stickers, Enamel DotsHappy Moments Stamp

Now let’s look at some of the details. Hopefully this will give you ideas for your pocket pages! Also, don’t miss the bullet points/prompts at the end of the post!

For the date, I used a tag from the 2018 Calendars. I love how you can customize them to match anything. I water-colored in lavender the dates that the spread covers (you can use a highlighter or simply circle them). Stamping with the Happy Moments Stamp and Puffy Star Stickers add some contrast:

One of my favorite things on this spread is the “pocket-in-the-pocket” I created with one of the 4″ x 6″ tags from the March Kit:

I created it out of necessity because I had copies of texts and a personal story I wanted to include. I folded the tag in half, cut the front at an angle and glued the bottom and side with a thin tape. I had to trim a little off the tag I used inside for the journaling so that it would fit, but I found that it works perfectly on the top part of the page. I enjoyed decorating the front using the “this is a story about” phrase from the Happy Moments Stamp and White Puffy Alphabet Stickers.

The last thing I wanted to share is a journaling trick:

I often end up with random things I want to mention on my spreads and so here I had the idea to create a “Best” list, adapting the categories to my journaling of course! I think it makes it a more interesting and fun read!

Here are some ideas or suggestions that you can try on your next pocket page:

  • create a pocket with a 4″ x 6″ tag either to hide journaling or to add ephemera, or extra photos!
  • use a stamp to start a sentence or a title. The “this is a story about” from the Happy Moments Stamp is awesome for that!
  • Start a journaling list with “Best…” adapting it to what you wish to write

Thank you for stopping by! If you use any of these prompts, share them on Instagram with the hashtag, #EllesStudio and tag me, @anounceofcreativity —I would love to see! And come back here to the blog tomorrow for more inspiration using the March 2018 Kit and add-ons!

Creative Stamping with Laura Wonsik

Hold on to your seats, because this post by Laura Wonsik may just blow you away if you’re an avid stamper. Even if you’re not, we think you will be inspired to give it a try after you see how Laura used the pieces of our Happy Moments Stamp on this layout. Let’s take a look:

Have you ever fallen in love with a holiday or otherwise “themed” stamp set but been too concerned about it’s versatility to buy it? Well, I’m here to share a few ideas that will help you think outside the box when it comes to stamp sets and stretch them for use outside of their originally intended purpose.

Whenever I work with a stamp set, I think of three things: how stamps can be used together, how I can use a part instead of a whole, and how I can create a pattern. I did all three of these things with this stamp set for this non-Easter themed layout and love how it turned out.

Supplies | One of a Kind Wood Veneer, Shapes and Dots Puffy StickersHappy Moments Stamp

First, I thought of how I could use just parts of these stamps to make a different image. When I looked at the bunnies I noticed three distinct parts: the ears, the head and the bottom.

Using just the ears, I realized I could make them look like petals of a flower. And if I repeated the petals, I could make an entire flower!

Then, realizing I needed a center for the flower, I decided to use a technique called “stamp kissing.” This is where you ink one stamp and then stamp that onto another stamp, making them “kiss” each other. So, I stamped the dots with black ink and then stamped that onto the bunny’s bottom and then stamped that onto the paper that had already been stamped with a half circle from the bunny. I punched that out and then put it in the middle of a repeated circle of bunny ears and voila—a flower!

I noticed if I just used the bottom of the bunny I could make a half circle- and if I repeated those half circles I could make a scalloped edge!

Looking at the dots, I thought of how using only one of the lines as a border could look like little lights along the edge- so I used a scrap paper along the edge as a mask and stamped yellow dots along my scalloped border.

For a little added texture, I layered another piece of white paper in the middle of the layout and distressed the edges using a nail file. It’s a subtle technique, but I like the way it adds another textural element. I then repeated the dot masking technique on the border of that paper.

I placed the One of a Kind Wood Veneer title next to the photo and repeated the “for
the record” stamp as a pattern above it. I stamped a few random bunny tails in green,
scattered with puffy stars from the Shapes and Dots Puffy Stickers as well.

Last, I added word strips as my journaling so that I could easily work around the flowers I had placed.

As a variation- you could also stamp the circles coming from the outside of the page to make a scalloped edge going toward the inside of the layout.

Thanks for reading and hope you have a “hoppy” day!

One Product, Three Ways: Rainbow Acrylic

Our Rainbow Acrylic may just be one of our favorite products from the March reveal, and today we have three different design team members, Andrea, Nancy and Daniela to show it off on three different projects! Let’s take a look:

Supplies | March 2018 Kit, March Labels, Puffy Star Stickers, Rainbow Acrylic, Little Acrylic Hearts

Andrea | I am so excited to share how I made this 6″ x 8″ spread that focuses on the rainbow acrylic piece! It only made sense to use all the colors. The first thing I did was look for a fun and inspirational quote about rainbows and their significance and found an awesome list of ways to “be a rainbow”. I typed up the list with my vintage typewriter and glued down the Rainbow Acrylic to a piece of white cardstock. Then I grabbed my water color tray and splattered all the colors around the entire page.

On the neighboring page, I selected tags with colors and sentiments that coordinated. I also snipped out March Labels in all of the colors of the rainbow and stacked them on a 3″ x 4″ tag with the yellow “you make me happy” die-cut from the  March 2018 Kit popped up for some dimension and balance. I hope you’ve been inspired to use the gorgeous rainbow in one of your layouts!

Supplies | Rainbow Acrylic, Happy Moments Stamp, XOXO 6″ x 6″ Paper Stack

Nancy | The beautiful rainbow acrylic is the perfect little something special to embellish your next card with! The burst of color and texture makes for an easy and bold card design.

To create this card, begin with a white card base. Use a heart die cut to ground the rainbow element in the center—the February Digital Cut File would be perfect! Use a matte medium to secure the acrylic piece and add a row of coordinating colored enamel dots in the center of the rainbow. Add a small sentiment to a die cut banner or tag and place in the center of the card. A strip of patterned paper from the XOXO 6″ x 6″ Paper Stack adds a sweet heart design to edge of the card.

This is such a quick and easy card to create. And that Rainbow Acrylic—the perfect homemade goodness accent!

Daniela | I’m so excited to share this layout, focusing on the Rainbow Acrylic today. Rainbows always have a magic and cheerful touch to me, so I created a happy page about the decoration my son prepared for his kindergarten summer feast.

The layout came together quickly, because I didn’t need much other decoration on my page since this colorful acrylic rainbow is such an eye-catcher.

Have fun using your rainbow, I’m sure it will cheer you up!

We can’t wait to see how you use your Rainbow Acrylic! Be sure to share your projects on Instagram using the hashtag #EllesStudio so that we can see how you used this fun product!

Creating in Color with March Guest Natalie Elphinstone

We are SO excited to announce one of our favorite paper crafters as our March guest designer—Natalie Elphinstone! We chose Natalie because, just like us, she is a BIG fan of color, and that shows when you look at her Instagram feed. Please join us in welcoming her, and let’s take a look at what she created to share with us today!

Hi everyone! My name is Natalie Elphinstone and I’m so excited to be here as a guest designer for Elle’s Studio this month.

I find it really easy to create with Elle’s Studio designs because they’re just so universal and adaptable. Classic patterns and bold colours means I can always match photos with products every single time. When I sat down to create today I ended up with not just one but two layouts to share with you!

The first one uses the March 2018 Kit and add-ons because I think it’s just as fun to use these cards on layouts as they are to slip into pocket pages.

Supplies | March 2018 Kit, March Digital Cut Files, Big Moment Phrase StickersOne of a Kind Wood VeneerPuffy Star Stickers, Cerulean Blue Puffy Alphabet StickersLive Laugh Love 12″ x 12″ Paper Collection

I started by busting out my old Silhouette machine to cut the star patterned background using the March Digital Cut Files. I admit, it’s been a long time since I used my cutting machine, but the digital files this month had me searching for my power cord as soon as I saw them! I went for a white on white look which creates a fabulous background detail without being too overwhelming. (Although it’s shockingly difficult to photograph!)

I was desperate to use the One of a Kind Wood Veneer as my title on this page for Shiloh’s baby album. My littlest girl might be the fourth child, but she’s already proving she’s got a unique personality—she’s not following in the footsteps of my other kids at all! I completed the title with some Cerulean Blue Puffy Alphabet Stickers layered on top, and I love this mix of different textures!

At Shiloh’s dedication (similar to a baptism) she had many prayers and words spoken over her that I wanted to record. I typed them all up and printed them out onto a 4″ x 6″ tag from the March 2018 Kit and paper that I’ve slipped behind the photo. The photo is attached by a single staple behind the ‘big day’ diecut so that you can lift it up and read the journaling underneath.

Next, I used a couple of 3″ x 4” tags from the March 2018 Kit to create even more layers behind my photo. One of them I cut in half so it could stick out both the top and bottom, and I finished off the page with more diecuts, stickers and Puffy Star Stickers. I like to have lots of layers and embellishments, but my trick to keep it from becoming too busy is to use a limited colour palette, and keep it all lined up. On this page I’ve clustered everything down the left hand side and your eye should follow that direction easily rather than having things scattered all over the page.

Supplies | Letter and Number Stickers — Black, Shapes and Dots Puffy StickersLive Laugh Love Double-Sided Journaling TagsLive Laugh Love Wood VeneersLive Laugh Love 12″ x 12″ Paper Collection

My second layout was created with the Live Laugh Love collection. I love all of the bright and happy colours in the collection but once again decided to limit myself to just a few of them – this time choosing the greens, greys and a touch of woodgrain. Another advantage of scrapping in this way is that it means you can choose a different colour palette each time and end up with multiple projects from the same collection which all look completely different from each other.

I was inspired to do some fussy cutting for this layout and thought the scallop pattern from the Pennants paper in the Live Laugh Love 12″ x 12″ Paper Collection would look good strung across the length of my page. I wanted it to look like it was attached to something though, so came up with this idea of constructing a ‘frame’ within my layout.

Rather than layering the green paper on top of the woodgrain paper on top of the white background paper I did it the other way around. I actually cut a square out of my white paper, then backed it with the woodgrain paper before cutting a smaller square out of that one, and finally backing it all with the green paper. Was this more difficult method worth it? I’m not sure! But it did make me feel like I was being very creative!

Now if you’re wondering about my crazy title that’s fair enough! I tell the story in my journaling, but basically it came about when I got a new phone for Christmas and I wanted to test out the camera functions. There’s one setting called ‘stage light mono’ which takes these dramatic black and white shots that I love, but which on this first attempt made it look like Moriah’s head was floating in mid-air!

The photos made me laugh though, and hence why I used this 4″ x 6” tag from the Live Laugh Love Double-Sided Journaling Tags for the title. For my hashtag subtitles I used the Letter and Number Stickers in black to balance out all that black in the photos. Since they were so long I made sure to use a ruler to line them up properly! And lastly, I finished the layout off with a couple of Live Laugh Love Wood Veneers, as well as some Shapes and Dots Puffy Stickers.

Thanks for letting me share these layouts today. I’ll be back again next week with some different projects to show you!

I’m Natalie and I’m waving hello to you from the bottom of Australia! I’ve been paper- crafting since the birth of my fist child which must make it over 11 years now! I’ve gone on to have 3 more children who are 8, 3 and 8 months so I’ve got plenty of photos to scrap and lots of stories to tell.

In my ‘other life’ I’m a doctor specialising in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and I feel very lucky to have delivered over 1000 babies. My heart and my days are full, and very very happy!

You can find me sharing my creative journey and family life on InstagramFacebook, and YouTube.

Thanks so much to Natalie for sharing these beautiful layouts and for being our guest designer this month! If you’re not following Natalie, what are you waiting for?! We love her beautiful, creative and colorful style, and can’t wait to share what else she’s created with Elle’s Studio products! Come back next week to see more creations from this talented designer!

A Colorful Celebration with Suzanna Stein

We are so excited about our colorful, new March 2018 kit, and our design team is, too! For our first March blog post this month, Suzanna Stein is sharing a beautiful pocket page spread all about a special birthday with her family. Let’s take a look:

Hey there, crafty pals! It’s Suzanna here and I’m so excited to share a project with you that I created using the March kit and add-ons.

Supplies | March 2018 Kit, Big Moment Phrase Stickers, Heart of Gold Chipboard StickersCerulean Blue Puffy Alphabet Stickers, Happy Moments Stamp

I had so much fun creating these pocket pages and used a few tags in different ways than they may have been intended, which is one of my favorite things to do while crafting!

For the first page of my spread, I used a journaling tag with lines for my title. I used a mix of the Happy Moments Stamp and Cerulean Blue Puffy Alphabet Stickers to create the title for my layout, then added a simple red heart from the Heart of Gold Chipboard Stickers in the bold box at the top of the card.

I also created a little cluster on the rainbow dot card for my date. In the cluster, I added a die cut from the March Kit with staples and a Heart of Gold chipboard heart to add dimension.

On the second page, I used more layers and clusters to add detail and dimension to the layout. One of the favorite tags that I used is half of the “always a favorite” 4″ x 6″ tag that came in the March Kit. After cutting it in half, I added a die cut with staples to hold a simple sentiment.

I brought the rainbow over to this side of the layout with the 3″ x 4″ rainbow stripe card from the March Kit. I like that this brings balance to the layout!

For the journaling, I used the 5 things card for a few simple words. I didn’t use this to list five things, but I love the simple journaling it allows me to add—almost like a second title.

To finish the layout, I splattered gold craft spray across various cards throughout the spread. I love the bright colors of this kit and that I was able to document a special birthday memory in such a vibrant and uplifting layout!

I’ll be back next month for more crafty inspiration! Until then, I can’t wait to see what you’re creating using this kit!
