Five on Friday with Kim Chaffin

We are so excited to welcome a new post to the ES blog this year: Five on Friday! One Friday per month, we are challenging one of our design team members to create using only 5 different products from the shop. Let’s take a look at what products our new design team member, Kim Chaffin, chose to work with this month!

Hello, fellow scrapbookers! It’s Kim, and I’m so excited to be sharing my first Elle’s Studio blog post! Today’s feature, Five on Friday, is new for 2021, and it is right up my alley! I’m a fairly  minimalist scrapbooker, and when I’m creating, I often find that less really is more. Let’s jump right in!

Supplies | January 2021 KitJanuary 2021 Cut Files, Love You Chipboard Stickers, All My Heart Wood VeneersXOXO 6 x 8.5 Inch Paper Stack

Paring down the product on a page leaves room for you to tell a longer story and really puts your photos in the spotlight. Minimizing your product selection doesn’t limit your creative options! Try choosing an item you love from the kit, then find other elements with coordinating colors and accents.

I chose the “You, Me, Us” tag from the January 2021 Kit. I adhered it with pop dots to give it dimension. Next, I chose a patterned paper in a coordinating color from the XOXO Paper Stack and wooden heart veneers from the All My Heart Wood Veneers to echo the heart shapes on the tag.

Digital elements are another great way to keep things looking simple. Did you know that you can use the January 2021 Cut Files as digital elements on your photos? I added the “Love You” file in my photo editing software, resizing it and recoloring it to better suit my photo. I erased a small portion of the bottom of the letter y to make it appear that the Love You title was behind my husband in the photo. After printing my photo, I layered Love You Chipboard Stickers and an All My Heart Wood Veneer piece to create an uncomplicated, yet creative, title.

I pulled it all together with a phrase sticker from the Love You Chipboard Stickers and one more All My Heart Wood Veneer. When at a loss for where to place an accent piece, try creating a triangle in the arrangement of products in your design. This will help create a unified look.

Ready to give it a try? Your creativity will shine, and the bonus is that you’ll stretch your supplies to create more projects than ever before. Pull out your January Kit, and see what you can make with Five on Friday!

Throwback Thursday with Sarah Lee

Hello, all you beautiful Elle’s Studio fans! It’s Sarah, and I’m super excited to be sharing my first post here as a part of the Elle’s design team.

Today, I’m thrilled to bring you something new in 2021: Throwback Thursday on the blog! What does that mean exactly? It means you go back to any past Design Team Inspiration blog post to help spark your creativity, and that’s exactly what I did. I went back to January 2020, and one of Katarina’s layout got my creative juices flowing:

Her gorgeous layout inspired me in more ways than one. First off, I loved the way she used stamps to help create a background, so I used that idea on my project too.

Supplies | January 2021 Kit, Love You Chipboard Stickers, Puffy Heart StickersXOXO 6 x 8.5 Inch Paper Stack, Hugs and Kisses Stamp

I used the Hugs and Kisses Stamp and the Puffy Heart Stickers to get a similar background as seen on Katarina’s layout. I love how something as simple as stamps and stickers can create a beautiful, repetitive pattern for any page.

And because I love this stamp set so much, I wanted to incorporate it into my title somehow. I used the “This Is Love” stamp a couple of times to spruce up my project. I loved how it turned out! And it blends in so seamlessly with my journaling.

To add some dimension, color, and “pop” to my layout, I added some of the Love You Chipboard Stickers to this cute photo of my fur baby. Viola! Instant cuteness!

I also really liked the way Katarina added a stamped tab to her photo, so I decided to do it too! And yup, I used another fun stamp from the Hugs and Kisses stamp set to do it.

So, tell me – what do you think?! I love how a blog post from last year inspired me to create this layout of mine. Do you like the idea of using projects from past blog posts for inspiration? I know for sure I do. Anyway, if you want to create but don’t know where to start, let’s spark that creativity with a Throwback Thursday! If you do end up making something, please share with all of us over on our Facebook Group. We’d love to see how you used Throwback Thursday as inspiration!

Thanks for letting me share some of my work with all of you!

Love in a Traveler’s Notebook with Aimee Mertell

Hello, friends! It’s Aimee here to share a travelers notebook page I’ve created using the new January 2021 kit and extras. Even though it’s a smaller size, there are still plenty of ways to use your 3″ x 4″ and 4″ x 6″ tags. I opted to use an album with 3″ x 4″ pockets on one side and a full page on the other.

Supplies | January 2021 KitTrue Love Stickers, Dark Pink Puffy Alphabet Stickers, Puffy Heart Stickers, All My Heart Wood VeneersXOXO 6 x 8.5 Inch Paper Stack

Having the pockets on one side really makes it simple—you can just slip your photos or tags in as is or do a little extra embellishing as I’ve done here.

For the full page side of the spread, I selected the lovely dark pink plaid and the teal “xo”patterned paper from the XOXO Paper Stack, trimmed them down and arranged them on the edge of my page.

I then selected the 4″ x 6″ tag from the January 2021 Kit that reads, “this is love.” I flipped it and trimmed it down to fit as a layering element behind this adorable photo of my daughter. I really love how the sentiment on the tag acts as a title for my spread.

I then grabbed the All My Heart Wood Veneers and in keeping with my vertical design, arranged the wood veneer hearts alongside my paper layers.

To help balance the right and left sides of the spread and tie in some of that gorgeous pink color, I made a title for one of the journaling tags using the Dark Pink Puffy Alphabet Stickers that reads, “too cute!”

To finish things off, I added the “hugs & kisses” label from the True Love Stickers and of course, a Puffy Heart Sticker is always a must! While the pockets in the album made using the January Kit tags easier, you can also use them as layering elements or even cut them up—the possibilities are endless. I’m really loving documenting in this size and can’t wait to see how you use the January kit and add-ons on your travelers notebook spreads. Until next time, happy crafting!

All Over Acetate with Nicole Kerr

Hello crafty friends! It’s Nicole here, and today I am excited to be sharing my first post with you as an Elle’s Studio team member! I am also excited that I get to share a project focusing on one of my favorite types of embellishments: acetates! This month ES has released an adorable pack of Acetate Hearts in various sizes and lovely bold colors.

Supplies | January 2021 Kit, True Love Stickers, Love You Chipboard StickersPuffy Heart Stickers, Acetate HeartsXOXO 6 x 8.5 Inch Paper StackHugs and Kisses Stamp

For my layout, I focused on the largest two sizes in the pack. Acetates are not only gorgeous over photos, tags, and papers, but they are also just as beautiful when used on a solid white background. I wanted to really focus on these hearts and let their bold colors shine! On the largest hearts, I stamped the small phrases from the Hugs and Kisses Stamp in white, permanent ink, which needed a bit of time to dry completely so they didn’t smudge. I layered these with the medium-sized hearts and the Puffy Heart Stickers over the entire bottom half of my 12 x 12 white cardstock. Once I had them placed exactly where I wanted them, I used the Puffy Heart Stickers, staples and even a few of True Love Stickers to help hold these acetates in place. Tip: when using acetates, try layering embellishments over top and then adding the adhesive behind the layers so when the adhesive dries, you cannot see it! I also stamped small hearts from the Hugs and Kisses Stamp in grey ink to fill in some of the gaps between the other embellishments.

To help bring that grey into other areas of my layout, I added a grey 3″ x 4″ tag behind my journaling tag, added additional stamping in the same color and used the “Too Cute!” title from the Love You Chipboard Stickers to bring it all together.

Another technique that I love to use on my projects that adds a bit more texture is giving my photo layers a rough, torn look around the edges. I use an edge distressing tool to do this. In a layout like this, it helps break the layers apart when layered over the acetate hearts.

Acetate shapes, like the new Acetate Hearts are a staple in my collection and today, I hope I have inspired you to add them to yours! Don’t let the adhesive scare you! Simply hide it behind other layers and no one will ever know! If you have other ways that you use acetates, please share them with us on social media using the hashtag #EllesStudio, or in our Elle’s Studio Facebook Group. Thanks so much for joining me today. I hope you’ve had fun and been inspired!

Love You In Blue with Jackie Ashton

Hello, Elle’s Studio friends! It’s Jackie here with my first blog post as an Elle’s Studio design team member! I’m beyond excited to be part of this team and I’m looking forward to sharing my projects with you during 2021.

When I received my supplies for this month assignments, I was immediately drawn to the Love You Wood Veneer and knew that I wanted to use it as a title for one of my layouts.

Supplies | January 2021 Kit, True Love Stickers, Chipboard Label Stickers, Puffy Heart Stickers, All My Heart Wood Veneers, Love You Wood Veneer, XOXO 6 x 8.5 Inch Paper StackHugs and Kisses StampGrateful Stamp, Daily Tabs Stamp, Everyday Tab Stamp

After choosing my photograph, I decided to use blue tones which suited the photograph perfectly. I then went through the journaling tags in the January 2021 Kit, choosing two of the blue ones, and added three of the patterned papers from the XOXO Paper Stack

Using the blue polka dot paper from the XOXO Paper Stack, I punched a border on the bottom edge to add some extra detail. I also layered the lovely teal ‘XOXO’ paper across the middle and made a large pennant with the white heart paper.

I knew I wanted my photograph to be in the centre of my layout with the two journaling tags to either side. So after layering my photograph with patterned paper, I added my photograph to my layout. Next, I was ready to add some extra details to my journaling tags before I added these to my layout.

On the blue heart tag from the January Kit I added a stamped phase from the Hugs and Kisses Stamp, and placed that to the left of my photograph, overlaying it with the Love You Wood Veneer

On the ledger pocket tag, I added my journaling along with the “love this smile” stamped phase from the Grateful Stamp at the top of the tag. At the base, I stamped “xo” from the Hugs and Kisses Stamp to the bottom before adding a wood veneer piece from the All My Heart Wood Veneers.

I also added small cluster at the bottom of the page, using labels from the January 2021 Kit, and stamped the date using Daily Tabs Stamp. To bring the green down to this cluster, I added one of the blank Chipboard Label Stickers on which I stamped a phrase from the Everyday Tab Stamp.

Once all these were adhered to my layout, I was ready to add the finishing touches to bring the whole layout together. Using tabs and labels from the January Kit, Chipboard Label Stickers, True Love Stickers, All My Heart Wood Veneers, and the wonderful Puffy Heart Stickers.

Thank you for stopping by and I hope my layout has inspired you to create your own page by choosing one colour as you main focal point, working from there to add some fun details using the January 2021 kit and extras!

Show us how you focus on one hue in your January 2021 kit and add-ons, like Jackie did here! Share your project in our Elle’s Studio Facebook Group, or on Instagram using the hashtag #EllesStudio!

Using Your Kit Outside of Pockets with Shannon Dombkowski

Hello, Elle’s Studio friends! It’s Shannon here with a project showing you how to use your monthly kit outside of pocket pages. I’ll admit, it’s taken me a while to wrap my head around using pocket tags as somewhere other than inside a pocket, but it opens up a whole world of possibilities! Let’s take a look.

Supplies | January 2021 Kit, Remember This PrintablesJanuary LabelsTrue Love Stickers, Love You Chipboard Stickers, Dark Pink Puffy Alphabet Stickers, Puffy Heart Stickers, Love You Wood Veneer, XOXO 6 x 8.5 Inch Paper StackHugs and Kisses Stamp, Monthly and Daily Tab Stamp (free for subscribers!)

Look for tags from your monthly kit with words or phrases that you can use as a title, subtitle, or word art. The “this is love” tag from the January Kit is perfect for this! Since the wording is near the top, I was able to use it behind my photo. I chose the teal tag with the grid and hearts as another accent because the pattern was subtle. Since I mixed my tags with patterned paper in layers, I wanted to make sure there weren’t too many patterns overwhelming the eye. I also incorporated some of the die cuts from the January Kit into this side of my layout like the tab and tag.

The first half of my page title is on a 3″ x 4″ flip out that opens to reveal journaling. Since I had a lot of patterns on the other side of my layout, it was important to keep this side a little more simple. The monochromatic pattern from the XOXO Paper Stack was perfect!

When the title tag is flipped open, my journaling is revealed. I love using the digital journaling tags so I can type my journaling, and this month’s Remember This Printables included the perfect tag for creating a list of 5 things! I find that I often have a lot to say and typing it allows me to fit it onto the page better. This tag actually served as my color palette inspiration for the whole layout, which is odd, since it’s hidden!

I really wanted to use the Love You Wood Veneer as part of my title, but it was too big for the design I had in mind. Instead, I split my title. In doing so, I was able to add in some more color and a fun divider element in my spread. To attach the divider to my album, I cut two strips of paper to 0.75″ wide and about 4″ long. After folding them in half, I punch a hole in each and sandwiched them between two pieces of patterned paper.

I hope that you enjoyed seeing how I used some of the journaling tags and die cuts from the January Kit outside of the pockets. If you’ve never given it a try, I’m inviting you to dive in and see what you think!

Show us how you’re using your monthly kit in a project other than a pocket page! We’d love for you to post your project in our Elle’s Studio Facebook Group or on Instagram using the hashtag #EllesStudio so that we can see your non-pocket creation!

Sketch Day with Junell Kruzel

Hello Friends! It’s Junell here. Wow! I was lucky enough to start off with Sketch Day for my first Elle’s Studio blog post!

I love sketches! They make it so easy to jump right in and get started with no fear of the blank page. You can stick to the original sketch or you can flip it, mirror it, shrink it, enlarge it, or use half of it. It’s a jumping off point so the possibilities are endless. Let’s take a look at our first sketch of the month:

For January’s sketch, I chose to shrink it some and shift it to the bottom left of my 12″ x 12″ page.

Supplies | January 2021 KitTrue Love Stickers, Chipboard Label Stickers, Red Puffy Alphabet Stickers, Love You Wood VeneerAll My Heart Wood Veneers, XOXO 6 x 8.5 Inch Paper StackHugs and Kisses Stamp, Daily Tabs Stamp

To prep my white background and add some interest, I used a couple quick sprays of Heidi Swapp Color Shine in the color Sweet Mint. It matches the aqua color in the XOXO Paper Stack quite well.

I chose what pictures I wanted to use and printed them out at home. I really have been loving a mix of color and black and white photos on the same layout. Instead of keeping the photos in squares like the original sketch, I opted to print them at 3″ x 4″. I then chose two 3″ x 4″ tags from the January 2021 Kit. One included lines that were perfect for journaling and the other, a perfect sentiment for the layout. I just added the word “you” using the Red Puffy Alphabet Stickers to make a complete sentence.

I knew that I wanted to use the Love You Wood Veneer piece as my title so I positioned it above the journaling lines and it perfectly overlapped the other three sections. Once I adhered the two pictures, the two tags, and the title to the first patterned paper from the XOXO Paper Stack, I wanted to add pops of color and layer it up to add some interest. I adhered the white with black heart paper at an angle and then added my favorite striped paper. I used both sheets that came in the pack, but gutted what you cannot see because I love this paper and want to use it again! I used roller adhesive to glue it all down.

Now, you can’t have a “Love You” themed page without hearts, right? I used the Hugs and Kisses Stamp to stamp hearts in black to match the black and white heart paper and also used the All My Heart Wood Veneers. I placed them in a visual triangle around my grid.

Because I shifted my grid to the bottom left of my page, I needed to add something to the top right so it wouldn’t feel unbalanced. I had fun layering up some die cuts from the January 2021 Kit, True Love Stickers and more stamps, of course!

I finished up by adding my journaling and the date using the Daily Tabs Stamp. I hope you enjoyed seeing my version of this month’s sketch! I cannot wait to see what fun things you do with it! Enjoy!

Pocket Perfection with January Guest LeeAnne Jones

We are so very excited to welcome our first guest of 2021, LeeAnne Jones! LeeAnne creates beautiful pocket pages, filled with gorgeous photographs and simple, yet thoughtful details. LeeAnne worked with our January 2021 kit and add-ons, and created yet another fabulous pocket page spread. Don’t miss the fun tips that she’s sharing about the two techniques she used on this spread. Let’s take a look!

Hello crafty friends. My name is LeeAnne, and I’m thrilled to be a guest designer on the Elle’s Studio blog this month. First up is a pocket page spread looking back at February 2019 using the new January 2021 kit and extras.

Supplies | January 2021 Kit, January LabelsTrue Love Stickers, Puffy Heart StickersDark Pink Puffy Alphabet Stickers

I document monthly, and I’m pretty methodical about my approach. The month is nearly always limited to one 12″ x 12″ spread—although I’m no stranger to inserts and flip-ups as needed! When it comes to journaling, I make space for the details of important events and I use labels to write brief, sometimes silly captions for others. I also try to include either a quote from one of my kids or a description of some daily life detail that I want to remember. Here, I quoted a text from my husband, sharing something funny our daughter told him in the car. I feel like these bits will be most appreciated in the future.

Design-wise, I lean toward minimalism. I try to wrangle what often feels like a chaos of photos and journaling by using white borders and by limiting my embellishments to a few repeating shapes or textures. Here, I used the hexagon die cuts from the January 2021 Kit and Puffy Heart Stickers. It adds a bit of cohesion. Still, I like to get creative, too, and I incorporated two fun techniques on this spread. First, I used some Fiskars Paper Edgers scissors to mimic ripped tape. On the title page, a scrap of white cardstock as well as several True Love Stickers transformed into layers of faux washi.

The second technique is a hidden tag. As I was journaling about my post-tea exploration of Japantown, I recalled the photobooth pictures we took—and then I tore up my house looking for them! I fussy-cut my favorites from the photo strip and adhered them to the front and back of the tag-shaped die cut from the January Kit. Then, I tied a ribbon at the top and created a pocket behind the journaling card for stowing the tag. I love that these silly photos live here now instead of in my kitchen junk drawer, which is where I eventually found them!

I often include a photo collage (or two!) in my monthly spread. Typically, these are for multiple photos of the same event, especially one with few people (like an art exhibit) or one that was more about “me” than my family. Since this album is for the whole family to enjoy, I try to not take up too much space with my solo adventures. I make the collages on my phone with the Pic Stitch app, usually in a square grid. Then, I attach the print to a journaling card for a pop of cohesive color and room for journaling, and insert it into a 4″ x 6″ pocket.

I had so much fun playing with the new Elle’s Studio products this month. I hope this has given you some ideas for your pocket page documenting. I’ll be back in a couple weeks with a different project. See you then!

LeeAnne Jones is a writer and editor for lifestyle and travel magazines—although she has pivoted to cookbook editing and social-media marketing during the Covid-19 pandemic. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and two young daughters and has been scrapbooking off and on since attending a Creative Memories party 20 years ago.

Love You! With Katarina Prevendarova

Hi friends! It’s Katarina here, and I’m so happy to be here with you today for the first time in 2021. I hope you are having a crafty new year so far and today I want to bring you some inspiration using the gorgeous January 2021 kit and add-ons.

Supplies | January 2021 KitJanuary 2021 Cut Files, Jane Tile Alphabet Cardstock Stickers — BlackTrue Love Stickers, Chipboard Label StickersLove You Chipboard Stickers, Puffy Heart Stickers, All My Heart Wood VeneersXOXO 6 x 8.5 Inch Paper Stack, Jewel Polka Dot 6 x 8.5 Inch Paper Stack

I was inspired by the January 2021 Cut Files and used the speech bubble with a heart in it. I cut it in many sizes, colors and patterns using the amazing new XOXO Paper Stack and Jewel Polka Dot Paper Stack

I wanted to have a nice contrasting background for which I used dark blue watercolor that I applied in a circular shape. I wanted a lot of dimension, so I used foam tape to pop all the speech bubbles off the background.

For my title I used the Love You Chipboard Stickers. I used a couple of journaling tags from the January Kit to add layers behind the photo of my son and I being silly on Christmas Eve.

I filled in the empty spaces between the speech bubbles using the hearts from the All My Heart Wood Veneers and some of the Puffy Heart Stickers.

To finish my layout, I used a couple of the True Love Stickers, a chipboard circle label from the Chipboard Label Stickers for my journaling, and to bring a bit more black to my layout, I added my date using the black Jane Tile Alphabet Cardstock Stickers.

I just love all of the hearts and love-themed products in the January 2021 kit and add-ons. I really enjoyed creating layouts about my loved ones with them this month. I hope this project inspired you to tell your love stories using these fantastic products, too!
