Sketch Thursday 10.18

Today’s sketch is inspired by one of our awesome members, MaryPats. I love how she used our new Spooky Tales tags in her playful I love Fall layout.

So many fun techniques and elements here. Why don’t you give it a try? One (random) lucky winner will receive a $5 gift certificate to the shop! Just create a layout inspired by the sketch, post it to our gallery and link it back here.
Have a fun scrappy weekend!

October Challenge!

It’s been a couple months since we had a challenge for you guys, so we thought we should start them up again! This month, in honor of our new “Documented” series, you’re challenge is to complete a project and include your journaling on one of our 4 x 6 tags

On this layout, I used a 4 x 6 inch journaling tag from our Sweet Life collection and trimmed it down so it was the same height as my photo. I love the way the story and journaling stands out and takes center stage with the bits of treasures captured and higlighted below in my homemade hexagon mask!

I’m also loving our Number It stamp – it was such a fun way to capture and display my nephews age on this layout.

TO BE ENTERED TO WIN: Complete a project based on our challenge, upload it to our member gallery, and then come back here and link us up to it! A winner will be drawn on October 31st, so make sure to check back then to see if you’ve won the MEGA PRIZE PACK we are giving away!

Project Life

This week’s Project Life covers the week of September 17-23.

We had a lot going on this week, but I kept my layout fairly simple with large photos and simple journaling .  Sometimes that’s the best way to tackle a busy week!

One thing I focused on for the left side of this week’s spread was the theme of “goals”.   I added a photo of me after my first work out session with a personal trainer (yes on the floor).  The commitment to exercise is an obvious goal here.   The silverware stamp represents how I am striving for us to sit down each night at the dinner table as a family (instead of rushed dinners).   And I included a portion of my son’s chore list which was re-implemented this week and goes along with a “goal” theme.  These are all goals that are not necessarily achieved but in progress- and i think it will be fun to look back and see the progression.

On the right side I included a photo booth photo from my cousins wedding.  Instead of trimming it down I let the photo overlap into the 4×6 photo pocket.  It’s kind of crazy how many people we fit in that photo booth 🙂

Congrats to Owl in the Tree the winner of last week’s Prize Pack.   Please email michelle@shopellesstudio.com the following info to claim your prize:

Sketch Thursday 10.11

Hello there friends. It’s Thursday.. you know what that means. Time for a new sketch! With this week’s sketch you have a chance to use and layer lots of tags. Take a look…

(sketch inspired by Jennifer’s Pirate Jig layout)

DT member, Valerie, accepted the challenge and created this gorgeous layout:

Valerie said: “I was really inspired by all the layers behind the photo and how the title overlaps the photo in the sketch. I mixed some larger Elle’s Studio tags with some patterned paper to fill in the square shapes behind my photo. I layered on some Sassafras border stickers and Elle’s Studio tags throughout the layout. For the title I mixed and matched some different alphas—love that technique.”

Supplies used: Spooky Tales 3″ circles,  Spooky Tales 4×6″ journal tags,  The Sweet Life Tidbits, The Sweet Life Lil’ Snippets-labelsTrue Happiness StampSummer Lovin’ Tiny Tags

Don’t forget! You can win some ES goodies by playing along. Post your layouts inspired by this layout to the ES gallery and link it back here.

Thank you so much for participating last week! The randomly selected winner is Miriam.

Project Life

Welcome to another week of Project Life at Elle’s Studio!

This week’s Project Life covers the week of September 10-16th.

This week my focus was to go a little more in-depth in my journaling.  I am trying to do less of a “this is what we did approach” and really focus on telling deeper stories in my Project Life album.
I used my 3×4 journaling spots to share a little bit more about what is going on during this week.  I touched on the fact that my daughter has resisted wanting to go to preschool this year.  Something that came unexpectedly and we are working through.   I also shared about how she asked about 9-11 and that moment when I had to give her a (very watered down) explanation of what happened that day eleven years ago.
I included an insert for just our weekend, so that I could tell more stories.  We went to a political event and my husband and brother had an opportunity to pray over a candidate for US Senate from my state.  It was a powerful moment and I went in to detail about what happened that night.  Often when I go into more detail on a journaling card I end up using the backside as well.
The back-side of the insert showcases a milestone for my son- he learned to ride his bike with no training wheels that weekend.  I shared about the story of how he learned to ride a bike.

The right hand page shows two specific photos that I told a different story than expected.  The top right is a picture of my daughter asleep on the couch at my husband’s work.  Instead of stating just that, I shared that this was the hour before her ballet class (which is now in the afternoon this year).  There has been a big shift in our after school activities and it’s been an adjustment for our family!

And finally, we took the first trip to our new library since moving. I made a list of all the books the kids picked out to checkout.  I know it will be fun and interesting to look back and see what book choices they made.

Today we have a giveaway!   Leave a comment here for a chance to win an Elle’s Studio Prize Pack.  The winner will be announced next Tuesday!

Guest Designer Spotlight: Linda Barber

I am excited to introduce you to this month’s Guest Designer, Linda Barber!

I am a big fan of Linda.  I just love her and love her work.  She creates beautifully balanced layouts,  and always features rich journaling and beautiful stitching in her pages.  Linda designs for Creating Keepsakes Magazine, Lawn Fawn, and Technique Tuesday.  Be sure to stop by her gallery this month– such beautiful projects!  Thank you for joining us this month Linda!

name: Linda Barber
location: Los Angeles, California
blog: miles of paper
twitter: @lindabarber

1. What are three products you can’t live without?
White card stock, pattern paper, and my computer.
2. What do you listen to/watch while scrapbooking?
I will sometimes watch movies on my computer.  I have a huge amount of movies in my Vudu account. It’s kind of embarrassing… but mostly, I like quiet.
3. What is your favorite color combination?
I like spots of bright colors, and I don’t discriminate!
4.  What/who inspires you?
I try to keep my eyes peeled for anything around me that could be translated into a page or card. Sometimes I’ll attempt to recreate something from nature onto paper.  95% of the time it’s a total failure… but it’s a good exercise.

5. What are three facts about you that others might not know?

1. My husband and I are celebrating our 20th anniversary this year, and no, I was not a child bride
2. When I was little my mom told me that for every grain of rice I left in my bowl, my future husband would grow a pimple.  My husband has me to thank for his beautiful skin.
3.  I am a total germaphobe.  I make everyone who comes into my house go straight into the bathroom and scrub their hands.

We are giving away three of Linda’s favorite Elle’s Studio items!
