Sketch Thursday

Happy Thursday! Today’s sketch is inspired by our Guest designer, ScrappyJedi. Her It Totally Runs in the Family‘ layout is perfect for multiple photos and mixing patterns.

I was inspired by the vertical photo series so I started there. Instead of patterned paper I used several frames which have different colors and patterns as well.
I also loved how Melissa did a long title on her layout so of course had to give that a try!
For a chance to win a $10 gift certificate to the Shop create a project inspired by today’s sketch, upload it to our Member Gallery and post a link here. A random winner will be selected and announced with next week’s sketch.

Project Life

This week’s Project Life covers the week of July 29- Aug 4th.

The majority of this week was spent in Michigan with family.  We take this trip every summer and it is certainly a highlight for everyone.

I used quite a mix of Elle’s Studio products for this week’s spread!  You will find bits and pieces from various monthly kits, pieces from Saltwater, Penelope, 2014, and even Noel!  Yes, there are quite a few items in Noel that will work year round.   (the “pure magic” tag, the black chalkboard paper, the blue label, and the blue stitched journal tag are from Noel).  Our new collections will be available in September.
I experimented with some lettering as well in this spread.  “Lettering” is popping up every where, and I wanted to use some of my small letter alphas against the chalk paper AND a photo.   In order to center the letters the trick was to start mid word, in the center of the page (so the first letter I placed was the “W” in “two”).   I then worked my way down, counting the letters in each word and centering accordingly.
When placing the lettering on the photo, I wanted the words to begin at the same place.  So I started by creating a straight line with the first letter of each word.  That way I could center the letters they way I wanted, without having to move too many letters.
Since it was a full week, I created an insert photos, journaling, and some packaging.
I love using the circle tags in the monthly kits as a tab for the insert.

We want to feature your Project Life album!  During the last week of each month we will be featuring a couple Project Life spreads that caught our eye in the Member Gallery.  We will be posting Project Life spreads on our blog tomorrow!   If your spread is featured we will be sending you a $5 gift card to use in our store.   Good Luck!

our Monthly Kit + your stash

Hello there scrappy friends! I’m back featuring another fabulous monthly kit and showing you how I mixed it with my current stash to create a fun(ky) layout 🙂

This month I mixed the Elle’s Studio August 2013 kit with Studio Calico kits, BasicGrey wood veneer, vellum, Prima ink and orange thread. I love the yellows, blues, pinks and greys from both kits and while I prefer the bright colors, I decided to soften (and contain) the confetti with vellum to keep the focus on the picture.

I made a hidden pocket and tucked the cards in. The ‘weekend recap’ pulls out and has all the journaling. I also hand stitched the star and chevrons to add a little more detail and texture.

How have you used your kit? What stash did you mix it with? Show us, we’d love to see!!

Guest Designer Spotlight: Melissa Stinson

I am super excited to introduce you to our August guest designer, Melissa Stinson!

I was just thrilled when Melissa said she would love to be an Elle’s Studio Guest Designer.  I have been following her work of a long time and I could not wait to see what she would do with our Elle’s Studio products— her projects are amazing!  Be sure to check out her full gallery here, and be sure to also check out her Two Peas Garden Girl gallery as well.

I have to admit that another reason I love Melissa is that we not only share a love for scrapbooking, but we both share a love for all things Star Wars!  She has a wonderful weekly blog series– Geek Girl (which my kids loved looking all the Star Wars themed round-up photos posted).  And for those of you who enjoy a great resource for crafty blog post round-ups, she posts a Friday Favorites that I love as well.

Melissa, thank you so much for joining us at Elle’s Studio this month!

Why did you start scrapbooking and how did you get started?

My parents bought me a camera as a high school graduation gift, and soon after that I found myself in the scrapbooking aisle at my local Michael’s store looking for something to do with all the photos I was suddenly taking.  That was in 1998, and I haven’t stopped since then!

What do you listen to/ watch while scrapbooking?

I often have reruns of Sci-Fi or action shows on DVD in my scrap room– Stargate, Doctor Who, and Burn Notice are definite favorites.  You’re also likely to find a James Bond movie, Pirates of the Caribbean, or one of the Tomb Raider films on, too.   If I’m not playing one of those, then I’m probably listening to talk radio or a podcast.

What’s your favorite color combination?

Currently it’s aqua and yellow– I’ve been in love with it for about three years now!

Do you record every moment or just special ones?

I’ll record any moment that I have a good (or sometimes not so good!) photo of.  I keep a binder of photos that I’ve already printed out, with each set of photos representing a story I want to tell.  The photos I choose from that binder will depend on the products I’m working with at the time- I just select the pictures that will work with the papers on my desk.  Since the photos come from my binder, I know there’s already a story behind them, so that part’s taken care of, leaving me free to play with the product selection.

We are giving away Melissa’s favorite Elle’s Studio products!  Leave a comment on this post for your chance to win.

Project Life

Today’s Project life covers the week of July 22-28.

For this week’s Project Life spread I used the Elle’s Studio August Kit.  I can not express enough how much I love these kits, and how perfect they are for Project Life.   I am able to create my layouts in very little time when using these kits!
Here’s a look at the full spread.

I incorporated some papers from the NEW Noel Collection for my title pocket.  I love that red paper and the black chalkboard.

My son went to a fabulous day camp this week, so I included quite a few photos (that the camp took and I bought) and memorabilia from camp.   Other fun things that I included were some carrots from our garden (and a corresponding funny story), redeeming library reading points, and the first eggs laid by our chickens (quite exciting!).

Summer has gone by so fast, hasn’t it?  I am so glad I have our entire summer documented in Project Life.  I have January through mid May (last day of school) documented in one album.  My second album contains our Summer.  I will start a new album (volume 3 for 2013) the week my kids go back to school— which is next week (ack!).

Good Luck!
