“Well it’s 90’s degrees here in Maryland so why not try to cool off with a little holiday scrapbooking. Vellum is HOT right now and Elle created this stunner of a vellum to go with the Noel collection.  It had to be used ASAP!  I used it as a backdrop and I punched out my snowflakes with the leftovers!” Jen

Supplies: Serendipity collection, Serendipity Tidbits, Serendipity Large & Medium Journaling Tags, Serendipity Cutouts, August kit

“I was inspired by both the center cluster of items and the ‘spray’ of elements around the outside.” Laurel

Project Life

This week’s Project Life covers the week of August 5-11.
Slowly but surely I am catching up from the summer.  Last week I allowed myself to take time to work on my kid’s new school albums , resulting in being one more week behind on our weekly Project Life albums.   That is just life and there are things that will cause us to get behind in our albums– no big deal!

True, I believe it’s easier and more inspiring to be working on a week that is fresh in your mind, however, there are many things you can include when working on a week that is not in the forefront of your mind.

First, keep it simple.   There are not a ton of embellishments on this spread, just a few.  I wanted to spend my time trying to get caught up.   Second, use photos of inanimate objects to fill in space if needed.  (like the photo of the sunflower, and the calendar I included).  Third, use found objects to tell a story (back to school shopping for us this week).  And finally, don’t be afraid to just journal even if there is not a corresponding photo.

For this spread I used a mixture of Saltwater items and Penelope (available early september!)

We want to feature your Project Life album!  During the last week of each month we will be featuring a couple Project Life spreads that caught our eye in the Member Gallery.  We will be posting Project Life spreads on our blog tomorrow!   If your spread is featured we will be sending you a $5 gift card to use in our store.   Good Luck!

Design Team Highlight : Neutral Background Layouts

Hey, ES fans!

Today I wanted to share with you a few projects from the current Design Team Gallery highlighting neutral background layouts.  These layouts keep the focus on the amazing photos that they display and include many of our Elle’s Studio tags!

This layout, from Stephanie Bryan, uses a solid white background to showcase the adorable photo of this handsome little guy.  Stephanie included her journaling as a footer along the bottom margin of her layout and embellished along the left border of the photo with several tags, vellum and stamps.  A perfect end result!
Design team member Janna Werner creates the illusion of a neutral background using one of our pattern papers with a subtle print, even though it’s bordered by a wood grained paper.  The effect is still the same.  Your eyes are immediately drawn to the single photo near the layout’s center.

The last layout I’m highlighting today is by design team member, Corrie Jones.  Corrie creates a great home for several tags and embellishments by simply painting an area of her layout.  Gorgeous!

We hope these gallery highlights from our talented design team inspires you to create your own neutral background layouts and projects.  What creative ways will you find to display your Elle’s Studio tags?

Project Life Member Gallery Spotlight

There are some incredible projects in our Member Gallery!  We just love seeing the projects you are sharing with us in the gallery. Today I am sharing a few Project Life spreads that caught my eye!

We love this layout by Catb22.  The fun green paper in the opposite corners, and the month stamp are awesome!  I love how she paired a 4×6 card with a tabbed card too!

This layout was made by scrapsbyjen.  The bright colors of her photos caught my eye in the gallery.  The woodgrain saltwater tag compliments the photo of the tree!

I adore this layout by AnitaP.  The ariel photo of cookies and white space used in the spread are awesome!

Project Life

Welcome to another week of Project Life at Elle’s Studio!
This week I am sharing something a little different for our Project Life post.  My children went back to school last Thursday.  This is the first year they are both in the same school full day (Kindergarten and 1st grade).  After I went home that first day and dried a few tears, I decided I wanted to create albums just for them documenting their year in school.

I used Elle’s Studio’s Penelope (available in early September) to create Jordan’s first day of school album page.   I loved using the “My Favorites” and “These are the Facts” journaling cards to document her day, and her favorites right now.

I included her photo that morning as an insert.  On the backside I placed a certificate she got from her teacher for her first day of kindergarten.

A few other things included were her class list (which is blurred for obvious reasons), a note about how it felt walking away on that first day, a note in her lunch box and a sweet smiley face from her teacher.

I also started an album just for Jonah documenting his 1st grade year.
For the first pages of his album I used primarily items from our Cameron Collection.

I also used the “My Favorites” and “These are the Facts” Journaling Cards (Cameron Large and Medium Journaling Tags) in the same way, as Jordan’s layout.  I even used many of the same photos.  Using a similar set up helped cut down time for putting this spread together!

My goal for these albums will be different than how I view our family Project Life albums.  These will not be put together in a weekly time frame– I am letting it be open to however it comes together.  I am also not limiting the content to school activities/events.  I want this album to showcase their lives this year so I will probably do a little of everything!  I am excited to see how this album turns out.

Right now is a great time to start Project Life.  I have always viewed August as the second “new year”, and August of 2011 is when I started my own Project Life journey.  It’s a perfect time to give it a try!
Good Luck!

Capture Life – Faceless Photos

Faceless Photos – Let’s have a challenge
While shooting a recent High School Senior session, I had a request from the client for a shot of him looking onto the football field. He wanted to capture the memory of dedicating his Senior football season to a few special angels; one of which whom they just laid to rest that very day.
It got me thinking about how many of our photos we have that may not show someone’s face, but still holds incredible memories.
From that came the idea for a “faceless photo” challenge.
Find or capture a “faceless photo” and record the memories that come along with it.
I went through a few recent photos and found a couple more examples to share.
This photo captures a day trip to the lake over Summer break. It’s captures how little Ella is, yet how long her legs are getting. The sand toys she got as a birthday gift are finally get some good use! It reminds me of a fun & relaxing day with my kids. It reminds me how lucky I am to get to be a SAHM.
This was the moment the boys were playing “cowboys” in the yard. The moment Chase was over having his picture taken. The moment he turned and decided to rope me instead. The moment he laughed so hard it snapped him out of his crabby mood.

This was another client photo. I wanted to capture the back of her special shirt, but I also wanted to capture the way she was just getting the hang of walking & how we laughed at her cute little waddle. I strive to capture these memories for my clients as well as my own family.
This photo was taken at our family Fourth of July picnic. All of the little ones would line up at the top of the hill, count to three, and then see who could get to the bottom first. Oh, the giggles!
It also shows how awful the bugs were this year. LOL! While I could have removed them in Photoshop, I chose not to. It was part of the Summer memory & I wanted it to remain that way.
Now, let’s get those photos on a page & our memories recorded!

I used a combination of the new Penelope Collection (coming soon!) along with the August Tag Kit.

Here’s another look into that fantastic August Kit!

I hope you are inspired to take a photo that sparks a memory in a whole new way.
Now go on – get out and Capture Life!
