Documenting Home with Guest Designer Shu-Wen Tham

We are happy to welcome back Shu-Wen Tham back to the blog today to share her second project this month using the October kit and add-ons! Just like her last project, this one is interactive and uses the pieces from our latest products to create the perfect page in her 6 x 8-inch album! Don’t miss her process video, so that you can create a fun project to document your home stories, too!

It’s Shu-Wen here with my second guest designer project this month! I’ve always loved Elle’s Studio’s simple and elegant cut files, and when I saw the set of house cut files in this month’s October 2022 Cut Files, I knew I had to create an interactive page with it! And the house-themed pieces in this month’s kit and add-ons were perfect to document the prompt “your favorite spot at home” in my “Me, Myself & I” 6 x 8-inch album (prompts from @MyLittleJournal on Instagram). Read on to find out how I made this interactive page and be sure to find the process video at the bottom of the post!

To start off, I used one of the house cut files in the October 2022 Cut Files to cut out a house shape using red patterned paper from the Thankful Paper Stack. I made sure to size it so that it was more than 4 inches wide, because I’m going to be hiding a few 4″ tall journaling tags behind this house! Then, I pieced together two more pieces of patterned paper from the Thankful Paper Stack to make a page that is 7″ wide by 8.25″ tall, which is the size of a page outside the page protector in my 6 x 8-inch album. This page is going to be left-sided page in my album, so I made sure to adhere the woodgrain patterned paper to the right of the 6 x 8-inch words patterned paper. I used some of the remaining woodgrain patterned paper to back the door portion of the house shape, then used a large piece of vellum to back the entire house, giving the windows a bit of a frosted look.

Next up, I picked out two journaling tags from the October Kit. I chose the lined journaling tag with four houses on top to hold the journaling that I printed onto clear sticker paper, as the houses fit perfectly with my cozy home theme. Then, I printed out a photo to fit into the tag-shaped area on the green journaling tag. My plan was for these journaling tags to remain hidden behind the house with a brad and swivel out, so I attached two of the October Labels onto the backs of these journaling tags to function as pull-tabs to allow me to pull these elements out. I stamped a couple of sentiments from the Everyday Tabs Stamp onto the exposed parts of those labels and secured everything together with a brad through the bottom left corner of the house, passing through the corners of the two journaling tags, all the way through to the back of my 7 x 8.25-inch base. To stop my journaling tags from swiveling too far and falling out from the bottom of the house, I adhered a few of the houses from the Chipboard House Stickers along the bottom right edge of the house, keeping the bottom shut and serving as a decorative element along the bottom of my page. I finished off the bottom half of this house by adhering a heart chipboard sticker from the Chipboard House Stickers onto the center of my door.

To prevent the house shape from falling forwards and off the page, I adhered the top right portion along the roof line onto my base page, making sure not to put adhesive along the left roof line (otherwise, the journaling cards will have a hard time swiveling out from behind the house!). Next, to decorate the top of the house, I cut out the “this is my favorite” orange heart from one of the journaling tags in the October Kit and adhered it to the top right side of the roof. The long shape reminded me of a chimney, so I adhered several chipboard hearts from the Chipboard House Stickers in a cluster above the large orange heart to make it look like they were coming out of the orange heart. And finally, I adhered the word “home” from the Cozy Tile Chipboard Stickers near the top of my house.

I love how my interactive page turned out, especially how well the colors in the October Kit match with the autumnal patterned papers from the Thankful Paper Stack!
