Sweet, Not Spooky with LeeAnne Jones

Hello, everyone! Who’s excited for Halloween!? It’s time for spooky decorations, cute costume parades, and stealing pieces from the hidden candy stash every time you walk by that one cabinet (shhhh). I’m LeeAnne, and I’m back on the Elle’s Studio blog today to share a fun layout using the Halloween-themed products in our latest monthly kit and add-ons

Supplies | September 2022 Kit, October 2022 Kit, Halloween Die Cuts, Thankful Die Cuts, Jane Tile Alphabet Cardstock Stickers – Candy Corn, Autumn Chipboard Stickers, Tiny Autumn Hearts and Stars Stickers, Tiny Shapes and Dots Puffy Stickers – Neutrals, Thankful Paper Stack, Adventure Paper Stack, Warm Solids Paper Stack, Halloween Tabs Stamp, Large Star Jane Alphabet Stamp, Large Jane Alphabet Metal Die, Medium Jane Alphabet Metal Die

The design of this layout was inspired by two things. First, the “Happy Halloween” piece from the Halloween Die Cuts pack inspired the color scheme (and use of stars): black, orange, yellow, and teal. I added that piece to the lower right embellishment cluster on the layout. Second, my daughter’s honey bee costume inspired a repeating shape: the hexagon, reminiscent of a beehive.

Between the Thankful Paper Stack and Adventure Paper Stack, I had perfectly coordinating patterned papers to create and arrange my hexagons. I knew I wanted to add a solid to the mix, too, for highlighting some icons from the Halloween Tabs Stamp, and warm gray from the Warm Solids Paper Stack was perfect. Those smaller hexagons are popped up with foam tape to add dimension. I then used the same warm gray for the title along with the Large Star Jane Alphabet Stamp. (The title itself was the result of a serious brainstorm: How do I combine Halloween and bees? Turns out, the answer is sweet honey and some alliteration.)

A border is always a good idea with plain background paper, and because the hexagons ran off the edge, I added contrast with an inset border. Seeing the spider icon in the Halloween Tabs Stamp made me want to try them hanging out around a simple web border. Rather than a solid line, I made faux-stitch marks with a pen to echo the stitches on the teal patterned paper. And anyway, doesn’t everything look cute with a crafty aesthetic—even spider webs?

The three big embellishment clusters feature items from the September and October kits, the Halloween Die Cuts, and various sticker sets available in the Elle’s Studio shop. To maintain a consistent color palette, I was careful to select an array of black, orange, yellow, and teal embellishments, as well as a variety of sizes. I also intentionally left out the scarier items. No skulls or tombstones for this cute layout!

For the text, I layered two journaling tags. The bottom layer is the tone-on-tone orange spiderweb from the October 2022 Kit, and the top layer is the “taking it one day at a time” tag from the September 2022 Kit—with the sentiment trimmed off. I liked that it was the lightened version of the teal, so it popped, and it also matched the “No Tricks Just Treats” embellishment (which would have been an outlier otherwise.)

Well, that’s it for this time! I hope this layout inspires you to document your Halloween memories. When you do, share with the hashtag #ellesstudio on Instagram, or in our Facebook group! We can’t wait to see! Thank you!
