Scraps and Stamps with Steph Grimes

Out with the old, in with the new for 2020, and that goes for our scrap stash, too! Today, design team member Steph Grimes is with us to share how she is using up her December 2019 Kit and creating a beautiful pocket page spread around her stamps and scraps! Let’s take a look!

Hello friends! Happy New Year! I am thrilled to be a part of the Elle’s Studio Design Team for a second year and can’t wait to share with you all again this year. I don’t know about you, but to me a new year always feels like a good time to get rid of the old and make room for the new. To that end, I have been spending some time going through all my scrappy supplies and only holding onto the bits I love or have a plan for using. For my first project this year, I am using up some of the leftover bits and pieces from the December monthly kit.

The December kit had a lot of my favorite color included: TEAL! I always hoard these tags if I don’t have an immediate use for them. Since most of my projects for December were focused on Christmas, this beautiful color didn’t match with most of the photos I was using, and I had quite a few tags and die-cuts left over from the kit. That became my starting point for these pocket pages. I had recently taken these photos of my niece and I making treats together for the first time and the photos worked well with the cards I had left.  

One trick I have for using up leftovers and scraps when I’m trying to use up a kit is to incorporate stamps to make my dwindling supplies go further. The “Hooray” tag from the December 2019 Kit worked perfectly for holding a stamped title of this cute question I kept getting from my niece—It sounded like she wanted to put “bagels” on the pretzels, but she was really saying “sprinkles”! It was really funny and so cute when I finally realized what she had been saying. I used the solid Stanley Jr. Alphabet Stamp to stamp out the words from her question, as I heard them, in each box on the card. 

I also used the Wonderful Life Stamp with some of the Yellow Puffy Alphabet Stickers I had left over to create a little sentiment for one of my photos. I didn’t have another label or diecut left from the kit that matched or had quite the right sentiment, so I just made my own! Another great way to use your stamps to stretch your supplies.

I always feel like I’ve really done a good job when I can throw away an empty sheet of stickers—isn’t that just the best feeling? When you start to run low on alphabet stickers, you can sometimes re-purpose other letters or numbers remaining to make the character you need. For example, I didn’t have any letter “E” stickers left in these Yellow Puffy Alphabet Stickers, so I turned a number “3” backward and used that for my “You & Me” sentiment. I also could have mixed and matched alphabet stickers and stamps for an interesting look here. 

Speaking of using up alphabet stickers, I have a bonus tip for you today. When my puffy alphas are almost gone, I spell out words and phrases I know that I can use on future projects, and rearrange the words right on the acetate sheet for quick creating! For some of the letters I don’t commonly use, like X, I just trimmed them down with scissors to make them lowercase Y’s. I don’t mind that they are a little wonky, I think that adds character. I also have some numbers and symbols left that could be used. 

It’s always a great feeling to use your supplies! It’s so much better to get creative with them and find ways to use as much of the product you love as you can that to just hoard them for “someday.” I have found these tips help me get the most out of my monthly kit and extras and I hope you find them useful, too! Skiing Fun with Winter Wood Veneers and Daniela

Wood veneers are one of our staple embellishments at Elle’s Studio and our latest set, the Winter Wood Veneers, are a great staple to have on hand for all of your cold-weather scrapbooking! Design team member Daniela is with us today to share how she used them to record one of her favorite winter activities. Let’s take a look at her beautiful new layout!

Hi crafty friends. This is Daniela. A very happy new year to all of you, I hope you had great holiday and made some awesome memories! I’m super excited that I’m staying on the design team for another year and can’t wait to see what Elle designs for us 2020—I’m sure that tons of amazing goodies are awaiting us!

Today, I’m sharing a new layout with you using the Winter Wood Veneers from the December reveal. I love all of Elle’s wood veneers and these were perfect for documenting winter memories. Since my family loves skiing, I have lots of pictures taken in the mountains. This time I wanted to scrap a picture showing my daughter in her skiing outfit. This is how the layout turned out:

I created a purple background in the same color of my daughter’s skiing suit. This background is the display for a big cluster I layered with papers in shades of purple. I also draw some snowflakes with a brush. The wood veneers are also snow themed, so the hand-drawn flakes support the wooden elements which are the biggest eye-catchers on the page.

Paper layers are the one thing I include on all my pages. I love flipping through the monthly kit to choose tags I want to use for layering. This time I also did some fussy cutting and placed the word “Hooray, ” featured on a 3″ x 4″ tag from the December 2019 Kit on top of the picture and paper layers.

There are even more layers on the picture. I used some of the Winter Wood Veneers to highlight the picture and combined them with the Everyday Puffy Label Stickers. This created one large embellishment cluster, leaving a lot of white space on the layout.

I can’t wait to go skiing this season, but I have to wait until spring break. Maybe we’ll get lucky and get some snowy days here, but these days are really rare over here, so I’m really looking forward to our time in Austria.

Both of these scrapbookers used our December 2019 Acrylic on their opening page in their Document December albums, and we just love it! On the left, Amie (@mamiegirl) used our Dec 2019 White Acrylic against her bold, red background, and on the right, we love the way that Emily (@mrscraftyadams) created a festive tree using our Document December embellishments, along with the Dec 2019 Gold Acrylic. Both beautiful ways to start an album!

Let’s continue with more holiday projects! On the left, Raechelle (@raebellus) used our ‘Tis the Season 6 x 6 Paper Stack, along with Document December embellishments and Fa La La Wood Confetti to create a gorgeous and festive layout that we just love! On the right, we love seeing how Jennie (@jenniegarcian) was using her Document December kit in her pocket pages, especially those colorful acetate die cuts!

We spy a beautiful grouping of Document December products on the left, created by @livedocumentrepeat7873, which includes our Wonder and Christmas Shapes and Dots Puffy Stickers! 2020 Goal Reminder with Melissa Mann

The beginning of the year is a great time to reflect on the past year and decide what you would like to do differently moving forward. Design team member Melissa Mann is doing just that using our December 2019 Kit and shop items, with a brand new layout that we think you will love! Let’s take a look:

Hello and Happy New Year! This is Melissa with you today and I’m very honored to be joining the team again this year! I hope that you will join us all this year on the blog to get some great ideas and tips for using your Elle’s Studio kits! My first project this year is a scrapbook layout that I created about GOALS. A new year brings new opportunities. I have three simple goals this year and documented that with this project.

I knew from the start that this project would have a good bit of journaling; I wanted to definitely include three separate 3″ x 4″ journaling tags from the December 2019 Kit. I started playing around with placement and finally decided to imitate a newspaper with numerous columns. Once I figured out what I would use, I carried that design across each column. Each one would have a journaling tag, hidden pocket, and a picture. 

When I edited my photos, I cropped them to a square and changed them to black and white to imitate a newspaper article. I chose three separate patterned paper designs from the Home Sweet Home and Sunshine paper stacks and created my columns. I overlapped the bottom piece of patterned paper over the top piece to create a hidden pocket.

The idea for the hidden pocket was to be able to tuck in a shipping tag; I plan on including journaling through the year about how I am meeting (or not meeting) these three goals! I stamped out my title using the solid Large Jane Alphabet Stamp and used the corresponding Large Jane Alphabet Metal Die to cut them out. I created smaller sub-titles using the Jane Alphabet Stickers on each 3″ x 4″ journaling tag. 

I completed my layout by using the Goals Phrase Stickers and die-cuts from the December 2019 Kit. The last thing I did was stamp the “Goal Achieved” circle three times using the Wonderful Life Stamp. I cut each circle out and used foam dots to place one circle on top of each column.

Joy and Wonder with the December Digital Files and Patricia Roebuck

Digital designs stretch your supplies and allow you to get creative on your projects, creating bespoke elements for any project! That’s what Patricia Roebuck is showing us today, on a new traveler’s notebook spread that she’s created to document joy and wonder from her December. Let’s take a look!

Hello and Happy New Year Elle’s Studio friends! The holidays may be over, but we still have memories to document! Today I am going to share how I used the December digital cut and printable files to make a quick entry into my traveler’s notebook, creating a title to stand out from patterned paper layers and journaling to work within my design.

I started by cutting out the “wonder” and “joy” words from the December 2019 Cut Files from the ‘Tis the Season 6 x 6 Paper Stack, choosing solid patterned paper colors. Next, I cut out the ampersand from the December Cut Files from more ‘Tis the Season paper, but used the negative cut to create layers with the patterns, trimming it to form a banner.  This helps the ampersand, “wonder” and “joy” words stand out more, the solid papers standing out from the patterned paper and white background.

On the right side, I cut the frame from the December 2019 Cut Files with the ‘Tis the Season 6 x 6 Paper Stack and backed it with patterned paper for the holly leaves to stand out. For the berries, I used the Gold Shapes and Dots Puffy Stickers for more dimension and texture.

On the right side, I cut the frame cut file from the dotted mint pattern, then layered patterned paper and the photo under it to create a fun, layered look.

That frame grouping set the design for my journaling. The Wonderful Life Printables provide a great way to add lots of journaling in a small space, allowing me to work journaling into my design. I made one of the three labels a tad bigger than the other, and when adhering, kept to that tilting design to cascade down my page. I finished with the Holiday Puffy Stickers, tilting them as well, and the Gold Shapes and Dots Puffy Stickers to finish this quick entry!

If you have not used the Elle’s Studio coordinating monthly digital elements, I hope this gives you an idea for how to incorporate them into your next project. Cutting the titles in solid colors helped to stand out against my layered patterned paper banner. The frame on the right created a great way to add more patterned paper layers along with my photo. Adding journaling to fit within my design and not taking away from it was my favorite way to use these digitals. I hope you give these ideas a try!
