More in the Pocket with Jackie Ashton

Hi crafters! It’s Jackie here today featuring August 2021 kit and add-ons. I’m sharing a new 12 x 12 scrapbook layout and keeping it clean by using the Pocket Envelope Metal Die. Take a look at how I did that:

A few years ago here in the UK, the City of Bristol hosted an event in aid of the local children’s hospital. It was a Wallace & Gromit hunt around the city—a lovely reason to visit the city and something different to do over the summer months. I wanted to record this fun day on a layout.

After selecting a few of the journaling tags from August Kit, I matched them with patterned papers from the Good Times Paper Stack

I wanted to include a few additional photographs and the Pocket Envelope Metal Die helped me to add the perfect place to hold them and create an additional feature to my layout. I kept the envelope open so that the photographs can be seen peeking from the top.

My main photograph was backed using patterned papers from the Good Times Paper Stackk and sits to the side of the “love this” tag from the August Kit.

I did think about using the journaling tag as my title, but I had a large space at the top so I added an additional title using the Lizzy Alphabet Stamp, as well as the navy Jane Tile Alphabet Cardstock Stickers. This alphabet stamp set is just fab and another one that you definitely need in your collection!

My final touches were to embellishment my layout. I think I’ve used a bit of everything on this layout from the August 2021 add-ons and just love how they all work so well together. I used some pieces from the Positive Vibes Wood Veneers, Acrylic Stars, and the lovely Chipboard Circle Stickers

I love how quickly this layout came together using the latest August products. The hardest thing was deciding on what photographs to include inside the envelope! This Pocket Envelope Metal Die is now a favourite in my stash!

Breaking Your Own Rules with Kim Chaffin

Hi, friends! It’s Kim, and I’m happy to be here to share some pocket page goodness using the August kit and add-ons! This kit is so bright and fun, making it perfect to corral summer memories. Let’s take a look!

Supplies | August 2021 KitAugust 2021 Cut Files, Proud Of You Die CutsChipboard Circle StickersBack To School Wood Veneers, Positive Vibes Wood VeneersLizzy Alphabet Stamp

Sometimes I get hung up on self-imposed scrapbooking “rules” and find that it sucks the fun out of creating. Letting go of rules yields more scrapbooking enjoyment and completed layouts. For example, I often don’t allow myself to play with stamping because I am inexperienced. However, I adore the Lizzy Alphabet Stamp, and I knew I wanted to it to stamp the word “summer” onto the 4 x 6 inch striped pocket tag from the August Kit

I most always use printed text on my layouts rather than my handwriting. I can be pretty harsh on my messy penmanship, but this is one rule that I need to abandon sometimes. Why? Because my writing is a piece of my life that I would like to document if only rarely. On this layout, I chose to list some of our July happenings in my own hand.

I am a fairly minimalist scrapbooker, and when it comes to embellishments, I usually tell myself that less is more. This time, I simply couldn’t choose! I included the Proud Of You Die CutsChipboard Circle StickersBack To School Wood Veneers and Positive Vibes Wood Veneers because I loved them all! The best part is that the kit and add-ons coordinate, so it all works great together.

Rules have their place, but in scrapbooking, it’s entirely up to you! As always, I can’t wait to see what you create, and I’d love to know which rules you follow consistently and which ones you break from time to time!

Share what rules Kim’s post has inspired you to break using the hashtag #EllesStudio on Instagram, or join our Elle’s Studio Facebook Group and chat with us on our discussion board!

A “Proud of You” Brag Book with Nathalie Leonelli

Hello Elle’s Studio fans! This is Nathalie and I am here today to share a fun project I created with the new Proud Of You Die Cuts. They, along with the new Pocket Envelope Metal Die, sparked the idea to create a mini brag book for a friend!

Supplies | August 2021 KitProud Of You Die Cuts, Adventure Paper Stack, Pocket Envelope Metal Die

The base of this mini book is an envelope cut with the Pocket Envelope Metal Die in which I added a folded “accordion” from the same sheet of cardstock. I then added photos on some of the folds and patterned papers from the Adventure Paper Stack on the others.

The rather short supply list of this project is a testament to the awesomeness of the Proud Of You Die Cuts. Except for one piece from the August Kit, all the others you see are from that pack! Can you believe it?! My favorites were the “mini” cards (which are roughly 2 x 3 inches) that made the designing process easy and fun.

To finish up, I wrapped the closed envelope with twine on which I hung a couple more die-cuts. It makes such a cute present!

How will you use your Proud Of You Die Cuts? I hope to have inspired you to use them in fun and unique ways. Tag us on Instagram with #ellesstudio or share your creations in our Facebook Group.

Five on Friday with Jennifer McMurtrey

Hello Elle’s Studio friends!

It’s Jennifer here today with this month’s Five on Friday, where we challenge you to use only five products on a project. It is certainly true that creating with less product allows you to be more creative. While I am the first to admit that I have a very large stash of memory keeping products, sometimes I become overwhelmed and struggle to create as a direct result of this. Today’s challenge was perfect in helping me reign it all in and focus on what I really love, which is memory keeping.

Let’s take a look at the completed project that uses the following products to document my daughter’s 26th birthday.

  1. Lizzy Alphabet Stamp
  1. Chipboard Circle Stickers
  1. Light Teal Cardstock Basic Shape Stickers
  1.  August 2021 Cut Files – Half Sun
  1. Good Times Paper Stack

When deciding which five products to use, I knew the first would be a digital cut file—one of my go-to favorites, because I can manipulate the files to suit any and every project. Here, I turned the file sideways to fit the 5 x 8.25 inch transparency page and cut it using two of the patterned papers from the Good Times Paper Stack. Next, I tacked them in place with a very small amount of glue, waited for it to dry, and machine stitched them to the transparency

At the top-right corner of the transparency, I added two of the tab-shaped Light Teal Cardstock Basic Shape Stickers back-to-back. After masking the bottom of the tab, I used the Lizzy Alphabet Stamp (my new favorite) to add Phoebe’s initials.

The half sun looks amazing on the transparency, and I love how the black and white photo peeks out from beneath. To give the sun more depth, I journaled in the center and then doodled around the edges with black ink. I seem to be doing that a lot lately, but I love the fun vibe it adds to projects.

On the photo itself, I added several of the Light Teal Cardstock Basic Shape Stickers in the top corner with the Chipboard Circle Stickers in the bottom corner. Here, I again used the Lizzy Alphabet Stamp to add “2” and “6” to indicate Phoebe’s age at the time of the photo. To layer the stickers, I added foam squares to the backs before adhering them to the photo.

To create continuity between the transparency and the photo, I doodled a border on the picture using the same black ink as before. This simple addition really makes the photo pop and adds the whimsy that I so love.

As you can see, I was able to use five products to create an interactive layout with fun elements. I guess less really is more in this case!

Thank you for stopping by today! Be sure to play along with the Five on Friday Challenge and use the hashtag #EllesStudio when posting to social media so we are sure to see your creations. Who knows . . . you just might be featured on the Elle’s Studio blog!

Throwback Thursday with Meg Gundlach

Hello, my name is Meg and today I’ll be your guide through the endless stream of inspiration that is the Elle’s Studio blog. A couple months ago, I broke down how I translate inspiration From Sketch To Finish Vol. 6 into pocket pages and thoroughly enjoyed the process. You can find that post HERE. I thought I’d keep rolling with that today and embrace Throwback Thursday, drawing from what is already available right here!

Supplies | August 2021 Kit, August 2021 Cut Files, Note To Self Printables, Proud Of You Die Cuts, Chipboard Circle Stickers, Navy Puffy Alphabet Stickers, Good Times Paper Stack, Lined Labels StampLizzy Alphabet Stamp, You Got This Stamp, Dated Stamp, Nesting Tags Metal Die

There are so many amazing past projects that it can be difficult to know where to start, so I made it easy on myself and just jumped back a year to August 2020. Because I’m converting ideas to pockets AND I’m rubbish at committing, I actually chose three different inspiration projects and pulled my favorite bits from each. This is your friendly reminder to be inspired by the smallest details.

Since I want to play with the concepts rather than replicate a page, I don’t have to worry about page size or number of pictures, etc. Instead, I went hunting for a spread that would work well with the vibe of the August release and ended up in a week of late summer life from my 2016 album. It had just the right balance of fun, colorful photos and empty pockets with room to play.

This 4 x 6 inch tag is one of my favorite pieces from the August Kit and had to be used immediately. I love that the ‘label’ portion is large enough to hold a significant amount of journaling or stacking the Dated Stamp with embellishments. You may also note that not only is July 13–31 more than a single week, it isn’t actually evenly split into weeks at all. Not a problem! I aim for week-to-week documentation, but sometimes I just follow the photos I have.

I was smitten with the use of tags in Homecomin’ by Tracey Fox and since I now have the Nesting Tags Metal Die in my life I’m pretty much unstoppable. I loved the interaction of the cut-out words in Tracey’s spread, so I used the digital August 2021 Cut Files on a journaling tag in conjunction with the metal die. I’m always looking for reminders to use my digital files and this was an easy way to customize exactly what I envisioned. Here’s a look at Tracey’s original page:

Another August 2020 project I absolutely needed to work with was You Make the Sunshine Brighter by Steph Grimes. There were several elements I considered borrowing, but the layering of torn sections was most applicable to my pockets. I started with the striped tag on the left page as the most direct comparison to Steph’s, then carried the technique across the middle row with two more tags. Tearing is not something my type-A scrappy personality often considers and it was fun to give myself permission to just play.

This teal star tag from the Note To Self Printables, was just begging me to print my QR code right in the middle of it. I like to upload video clips to my private YouTube account as ‘unlisted’ and add the links in my scrapbooks. The way technology evolves, who knows how long this approach will be viable, but for now it’s better than having them lost on my hard drive.

I was obsessing over the cascade of colored labels on You Make the Sun Shine Brighter by Katarina Prevendarova, but just couldn’t find the space. It was still in my head when the rest of the spread was completed and I decided to minimize it to a cluster of tags and a Chipboard Circle Sticker smack in the middle of a couple photos. It doesn’t pack the same punch as Katarina’s striking page, but I reserve the right to return to that inspiration again.

And here’s a look at Katerina’s layout:

If you’re feeling a little sluggish about your weekly/monthly documenting by this time of the year, shake it up with this fun and easy challenge. Grab your new goodies and head to the blog (hey, you’re already here!) to see what jumps out at you from this season of past years. Want to up the stakes some more? Pick a month at random from the Archives filter and make it work! We always want to see what you are creating, so make sure you are using the #ellesstudio hashtag. If you do play along with a Throwback Thursday challenge of your own, let us know what project or projects were your inspiration!

First Day Fun with Michelle Flynn

Hi friends! It’s Michelle, and I’m so excited to be back with you today sharing a layout documenting my daughters first day of her Senior year using the awesome August kit and add-ons!

No matter what grade your child is in, that first day is always filled with a little bit of nervousness and excitement, both at the same time, right?  And what’s back to school day without those first day morning photos?  I had so much fun documenting a few of the photos I captured that day in this layout:

Supplies | August 2021 Kit, Navy Cardstock Label Stickers, Navy Puffy Alphabet Stickers, Tiny Shapes and Dots Puffy Stickers – Neutrals, Back To School Wood Veneers, Adventure Paper Stack, Good Times Paper Stack, Lined Labels Stamp, Lizzy Alphabet Stamp, You Got This Stamp, Open Here Stamp, Pocket Envelope Metal Die, Nesting Tags Metal Die

I couldn’t wait to use the awesome Pocket Envelope Metal Die and thought it would be fun to create an interactive pocket on my layout. I chose the light blue grid pattern from the Adventure Paper Stack and used the die to create this pocket envelope. I love that large title from the Back To School Wood Veneers and thought it was the perfect accent to adhere to the front of the pocket envelope. I used a circle Navy Cardstock Label Sticker and a Navy Puffy Alphabet Sticker for the top border of the veneer and added the star by using the star die from the Pocket Envelope Metal Die with the Good Times Paper Stack. Lastly, I continued using that fun paper to give the bottom of the pocket envelope a bit of a frayed border.

I loved making this little interactive mini pocket card tag flip to slide in and out of the pocket envelope. I selected the gray “documented” pocket tag and the blue “brave” pocket tag from the August Kit. I used the Nesting Tags Metal Die to turn them into tags. It was so much fun using three of the new stamp sets for the documented pocket tag! I used the awesome Lizzy Alphabet Stamp, the Lined Labels Stamp and the Open Here Stamp to create my title. I also had to use another star from the Pocket Envelope Metal Die because it’s just that cute! I made a few more pocket tags and added a hidden note to the last one.  I love interactive pages! It’s fun knowing they’ll someday not just look through these albums but also be able to be an active part of it.

Once my pocket envelope with the mini tag set was completed, I then chose the blue paper from the Adventure Paper Stack along with the notebook paper pocket tag to layer both photos of my daughter.  I loved that morning on her first day of senior year so much, as I was not only able to get the normal back to school photo, but I was also able to get a fun shot of her smiling as she was texting right before leaving for school that morning. After layering the photos, I adhered two tiny photo corners with the blue paper to give just a little added touch. I then used the Nesting Tags Metal Die to create a few more sweet tags popping out from the top of the photos.

I hope you have as much fun as I did documenting your own family school day memories with this release!  Remember to share your own inspiration using the #ellesstudio hashtag on Instagram and in the Elle’s Studio Facebook Group!  Happy creating friends!
