Kick Off Party: Project Life

Welcome to our website kick-off party!  We are celebrating our new site all week long– to see the schedule and participate in all the events we have planned for you, please click here.  There’s lots to do and some awesome prizes to win!  Plus, it all leads up to our next product release, just in time for summer!

This week’s Project Life covers the week of May 7-13.

There were three major events that occurred this week:  my grandma’s 85th Birthday, Mother’s Day, and the continued renovations at our new (older) house.
I decided that for the majority, I would focus on these three events in this week’s spread. There were a few other events that happened this week, quotes, drawings, etc that I decided to include, and there were even some events and photos I barely added at all.
For instance, my friends and I took our daughters in their ballet clothes to a wildflower field for some photos.  I added a very small photo of this in my spread in order to document it happened.   By far, this was the event I had the MOST photos of from this week, however I didn’t feel it told the story of our week.  It represents a time in my daughter’s life, and I feel these photos would be best displayed in a layout.  There is a deeper story behind the photos– the routine of our Thursday ballet class, the relationship built, the new love for ballet and tap.   Keep in mind, it’s okay to leave some photos out of Project Life completely and it’s okay to reserve photos for a layout.

Since it was Mother’s Day I added art work from both of my children– I just love that Project Life is a wonderful place to display these treasured pieces of their childhood.

Kick Off Party: Challenge #1

Welcome to our website kick-off party!  We are celebrating our new site all week long– to see the schedule and participate in all the events we have planned for you, please click here.  There’s lots to do and some awesome prizes to win!  Plus, it all leads up to our next product release, just in time for summer!
My challenge to you, should you choose to accept it, is to incorporate the everyday in a layout.

Maybe it’s my love for Project Life that encourages me to look at items such as receipts, ticket stubs, advertisements, and maps in a different light.   Recently I took my kids to the zoo and couldn’t help but look at the zoo map as a starting point for a layout.

I used the map as the foundation of my layout, then I added punched circle photos from our zoo trip and added them at the corresponding point on the map.   I used various Elle’s Studio pennants to note where we were at each photo/point on the map.

ENTER TO WIN A $20 ELLE’S STUDIO GIFT CERTIFICATE!

Now it’s your turn!  Use an everyday item in your layout or project for a chance to win a $20 Elle’s Studio gift certificate!

To enter:  We will be randomly drawing one winner who completes the challenge and posts it on our new member gallery!  After you have posted your layout to our gallery,  please come back here and link us up.

Don’t forget, complete all six challenges (four challenges and two sketch challenges) and be entered to with the GRAND PRIZE of a $100 Elle’s Studio gift certificate + our entire next release!  Once you have completed all six challenges please post in this message board post all six links to your layouts that have been uploaded to our gallery.  Winner will be randomly drawn and announced on Monday, May 28th.

Make It Sunday with Allison Waken

I am so excited to be showing you my process on this page for Make it Sunday! Elle’s tags are just too much fun to layer! My name is Allison Waken and I’m a wife and mom to 2 boys (9 and 7) 2 dogs, 3 snakes (plus 4 snake eggs), and 2 fish. This is pared down from when my husband and I first got married! We live in the desert of AZ and try to travel to our family in Southern California often!

You can find me at allisonwaken.com and allfortheboys.com

Let’s get started! I tend to start with a photo and a basic idea of design.

I add on some layers from here – this is a great way to use up scraps! Then I choose and place my favorite Elle’s tags (Allison used our Collected Cutouts, Collected Note Tags, Noted Journaling tags and our Pennants – brights):

Once I have most of what I’m using where I want it I move it off my background paper and splatter it with some ink.

Before placing my piece back on I like to distress a bit. I’ll distress the edges with scissors, a nail file, or just my finger nail.

Or I’ll get crazy and crumple it up! I love the dimension and character distressing gives.

I trim off the parts of my Elle’s tags that aren’t showing so I can use them again!

I place everything back on my page and maybe adjust a bit to my liking.

To stick everything down I just lift up the edges and apply some glue. This way I don’t forget where something goes.

I’ll apply a bit of journaling and/or a title. Then,  a bit of sewing and that’s it!

Here’s some closer peeks:

Our Make It Sunday blog series has been taken over by past members of our design team! We are so excited to see their work featured again, here at our site! Look for a different past design team member each week.

Join the celebration next week!

We can hardly wait for our BIG party to start next week! We are celebrating our brand new website and have some super fun and amazing things planned!

You’ll want to check here, at our blog, on Monday morning at 8:00 am PST for the schedule of events, then get ready to upload your layouts to our new site, participate in challenges, play games, and more!

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend and we hope to see you here on Monday!

Sketch Thursday 05.17.12

Hello and happy Thursday! Around here the sun is shining, the birds are singing and we’re spending lots of time outdoors. With that in mind, I created today’s sketch.

and a very sunny layout to match 🙂

This week’s sketch was inspired by the Lil’ Snippets: Beach Tag. I dressed it up a bit by adding twine to the title… fun! I also used the Winter Large Journaling tag (which is bright and perfect for Spring/Summer) and Collected Cutouts to journal, date and embellish my layout.
I hope you have lots of sunshine and make some time to play along this week! For a chance to win a $10 Elle’s Studio gift certificate, please post a link to your layouts inspired by this sketch here. Link must be posted by 11:59pm on Wednesday, May 24, 2012.  Gift certificate can be used towards purchase of products only and can NOT be used for shipping charges. Gift certificate balance must be used in a single transaction.
Last week’s winner is Wendi! Congratulations!

Project Life

Welcome to another week of Project Life at Elle’s Studio!  This week’s Project Life covers the week of April 30-May 6.
I am approaching a milestone with my Project Life album– I started Project Life on my son’s the first day of school last August (yes I started mid-year and not in January— anytime is a good time to start!).  This coming Friday is his last day of school.

I just realized this week that I have documented (almost) his whole school year!  Sure there are a few weeks here and there that I need to catch up on, but for the most part I have two large albums that show the span of time from the first day to the last day of school.   There is definitely a feeling of accomplishment when you can look back and see an era of time documented and complete.

As I was looking through my Project Life album I began to think about what I loved most about my pages.  I found that the pages I loved the most (and spent the most time reading and looking at) where ones where I told more stories and less of “we went here on Monday, we went there on Tuesday, etc”.  It is definitely fine to state where you went on each day, but for me, the most meaningful pages were the ones where I shared stories, funny things the kids said, meaningful conversations with my husband– those kinds of things.

With that– I want to present a challenge for all of you participating in Project Life.  Take time this week to flip through your album.   What parts do you love most?  What do you spend the most time reading?  What things would you like to incorporate more (or less) of going forward?  Thinking of these things have helped me as evaluate how I am putting together my Project Life album.
There are so many of you who have left comments that you are thinking you might start Project Life.  Well, why wait???   Now is a great time to start Project Life.  For those of you who have kids in school there is a natural change of pace over the next few weeks with school ending— starting Project Life for Summer break would be great!!  Anytime is a great time to start.

Stop by our new website Message Board— we have some great Project Life discussions happening!

xo,

Make It Sunday with Marcy Penner!

I’m a pretty simple girl.

I married my high school sweetheart and we have three kids (Molly – 12, Jack – 10 and Max – 8).  For the last 11 years we’ve been living on the family farm and renovating a 120 year old farmhouse in Canada.  Yes.  Still renovating!  😉  I’m a major homebody so country life is a great fit for me!

Back in the day I earned my Bachelor of Education degree, but an artistic life has always been calling my name (I come from a long line of artists)  I’m always busy doing something creative… photography, scrapbooking, decorating… you name it!  I love that scrapbooking combines so many of my hobbies into one!  It’s the perfect fit.

You can find me at my blog, Hello Forever (www.marcypenner.com), and hanging out on Twitter. I also design for October Afternoon and Project Life. I’m so very happy and honored to be here at Elle’s Studio.

I’m honored to be back here at Elle’s Studio for Make It Sunday.  Today I wanted to show you all how this layout came to be:

1. I usually start my layouts with a piece of white cardstock and by adding some ink/paint splatters.  And this layout was no exception.
2. From there I decided on my design… basically three rectangles across the center of the page.  One for the title, one for a photo and another for paper and embellishing.
3. I slowly start to layer on elements.  I know my title’s going to go on the left… and I know I want to use the large round journaling spot so that it can pull out from behind my photo (this is important to remember when adhering everything down).  These get piled up on a random sheet of copy paper.
Here’s a better look at the left side with stitching… I love that little documented arrow
… and the right side with the “notes from today” journaling spot tucked under.
4. For my title I chose some Thickers and placed them on a clear ruler.  Titles are usually the only things I like straight… go figure.
I placed these above the label on the left.
5. I cut of some of the new pennants and added them to the top.
6. The tops were trimmed off and a ticket was added when I decided that I didn’t like the space in between them.
7. I like adding tone-on-tone details to my pages.  They add a little bit extra and still keep my page simple.
Here I punched out some white stars and sewed them down.
Here’s a closer peek:
Here’s the journaling card filled out…
… and tucked back in.
