Tic-Tac-Toe Love with Guest Designer Susan

We are so excited to welcome Susan, a.k.a. @littlethingsbigdays, as our guest designer for the month of February! This month, she will be sharing three different projects with us featuring the February Exclusive Kit and add-ons. She caught our eye with her clean, graphic designs that always share the little stories of her life, and we could not love her projects more! Let’s take a look at her first post, and stay tuned to see her work again next week!

Hello everyone – I’m really delighted to be here as guest designer this month! I have always loved Valentine’s Day, and the February Exclusive Kit, with its traditional heart day colors and pretty touches of yellow and gray, inspired me to revisit some Valentine memories. When I opened my box of fabulous goodies from Elle and spied the large acrylic “X” and “O”, I immediately thought of a tic-tac-toe board and decided to use that to inspire the design of my first page.

Supplies | February Exclusive Kit, What Happened Stamp, Date Stickers, XO Acrylic- White, XO Acrylic- Black, February Labels, Speech Bubble Stickers, Little Moments 12″ x 12″ Paper Collection

After lightly drawing pencil lines to guide me, I stitched the lines for my “board” with white thread using my sewing machine. In the interest of full disclosure, I should probably mention that I first tried to freehand sew my board, which left me with a terribly wonky mess that couldn’t even charitably be called a tic-tac-toe board. Fortunately, my second attempt came out just as I’d imagined, leaving me with a nine inch square grid in the center of the page.

Now it was time to start filling in the squares. I decided to place my photo in the center, and then added the black and white acrylic “X” and “O” in neighboring squares, placing the colorful heart 3″ x 4″ tag (slightly trimmed) under the black “O”. I selected two more 3″ x 4″ tags, trimmed those as well to better fit the squares, using the “nothing means more to me” tag as my title and the “details” tag to hold my journaling.

I used the February Kit’s die-cuts, Date StickersSpeech Bubble Stickers and What Happened Stamp to embellish the squares and then, after trimming about 1/4-inch off all the edges, mounted the entire page on a piece of pink and white patterned paper from the “Little Moments” collection (one of my favorite Elle’s Studio collections!)

I love how the February Exclusive Kit inspired me to record this sweet little Valentine memory! I’ll be back next week to show you how I used the same kit for a non-Valentine page.

I love recording stories to capture our memories because I believe that all the little details add up to a big life. You can find me on Instagram as @littlethingsbigdays or on my blog “Little Things, Big Days.”

A Love List Mini Album with Jill Sprott

For our fifth and final day of our Five Days of Love event here on the Elle’s Studio blog, we are so excited to bring you a mini album created by Jill Sprott, completely from the heart. Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to reflect on the things you love the most in your life and what you are grateful for, just like Jill did here.

Any time is a good time to count your blessings, but each year, as Valentine’s Day draws near, I am always reminded of those blessings. I am so grateful to have so much love in my life. In that spirit, I created a mini-album to help me to document my many loves the form of a “Love List.”

Supplies | January 2017 Exclusive Kit, December 2016 Exclusive Kit, All My Heart Stamp, Olivia Alphabet Stamp, Always Acrylic Heart, Acrylic Frosted Hearts, Puffy Heart Stickers, XO Stickers, Valentine Banner Stickers, True Love Wood Veneer, Love Ya Wood Veneer Circles, Love You Journaling Tags, Right Now Journaling Tags, Monthly Journaling Tags

The album came together with help from Elle’s Studio products, in the form of stamps, acrylic shapes, die-cuts, and wood veneer, like the True Love Wood Veneer, which was stitched to my page for extra texture.

I mixed new and old in the pages of the album, working in some vintage dictionary and handwriting papers here and there. The album base is comprised of a series of alphabetized index cards, which have sat untouched until now for over two decades — my hoarding impulses actually paid off!

Throughout the album, I added a few pages with stitched garlands made from Elle’s Studio die-cut shapes as well as some hand-cut and punched shapes. Initially, I was going to trim the excess thread, but the strings brought to mind the idea of “heartstrings,” so I decided to keep them.

The heart of the album is the alphabetized “love list” and journaling that accompanies each item. I inserted embellished journaling cards between pages.

The album doubles as a love letter of sorts to scrapbooking. In the midst of documenting memories and moments, I had fun experimenting and playing with different techniques, some that worked well (like repeated stamping), and some that worked not-so-well (like stitching over puffy hearts). I just went with it.

I even made sure to include a few mushy-gushy, lovey-dovey pages for my husband. No love list would be complete without the love of my life!

Of course my daughter, who stole my heart long ago, deserved a few pages of her own as well, plus lots of extra embellishments.

So who’s on your love list?

Documenting Things We Love with Nancy Damiano

Since we’re talking all about love this week, why don’t we look at the things we love in our life, as well as the people? Nancy Damiano is with us today to continue our Five Days of Love event with a layout all about her son’s favorite place, and we couldn’t love it more!

Hi everyone, it’s Nancy here today with a design for the season. February is all about love and hearts, and I’m happy to be here celebrating this week with a page all about the love of toys! This is a closeup shot of the Toys ‘R Us flagship store located in Times Square. It has a ferris wheel right smack in the center of the store and it’s my son’s favorite spot in all of New York City.

Supplies |  Puffy Heart Stickers, Letter and Number Stickers- Teal, Letter and Number Stickers- Pink, Letter and Number Stickers- Yellow, Letter and Number Stickers- Red

I wanted to create a dreamy look to this design in contrast to the bold photo. Creating a frame of love and dreams was the objective. The puffy heart stickers were the perfect accent for this story. To create the raining clouds of words, I used a sewing machine to sew lines. The lines created the perfect place to anchor the Puffy Heart Stickers!

Layers of white clouds cut from vellum gave the top of the design an airy feel and anchored those sewn lines. This is literally a shower of love (for toys).

Using four different colors of the Letter and Number Stickers created a nice subtle sprinkle of words down the layout. A few glittery white enamel dots added just a punch of a different texture to the layout.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this page of love featuring the brand new puffy hearts!

Stay tuned for our final day of the Five Days of Love event tomorrow!

A True Love Layout with Melissa Mann

Melissa Mann continues our Five Days of Love event with a beautifully layered layout, complete with lots of color, pattern and texture. We love how she created her title using the January Digital Cut File, and since we’re all about love this week, we think you will love it too!

Hey everybody! I really loved the “True Love” die-cut file included in the January 2017 Digital Cut File and wanted to highlight it on the layout that I’m sharing with you today.

Supplies | January 2017 Exclusive Kit, January 2017 Digital Cut File, Valentine Banner Stickers, Joyful 12″ x 12″ Paper Collection Pack

One of my favorite things to do when working with cut files is to take the file and enlarge it to create a BIG title on my layout. I wanted to subtly enhance the title since it was cut on white card stock and I was backing against a white piece of vellum with black text. I used my sewing machine to add a bunch of stitching to the title and then used foam dots to adhere to my layout.

The bottom half of the layout was created by simply placing three blocks of patterned paper down on the background pattern and layering the 3″ x 4″ journaling tags from the January 2017 Exclusive Kit with my photo on top. Some of the die-cuts from the January kit were then sprinkled around and I hand-wrote a tiny bit of journaling on the cards.

I hope you are enjoying your January kit and the other January exclusives! Be sure to tag us on social media with #ellesstudio so that we can see your work, and possibly feature you in an upcoming blog post!

Celebrating Love in Pockets with Jamie Leija

Welcome to day two of the Five Days of Love event! Today we have a beautiful pocket page layout created by Jamie Leija celebrating the love in her life. Maybe her graphic and colorful layout will inspire you to do the same!

Hiya, Jamie sharing with you today! I created a pocket page all on the topic of love, well my love at least!

To create the page, I chose a few recent photos of my boyfriend and I, and one from the first year we were dating. To make it more unified, I converted all but one of the photos to black and white. Then I just had fun with the January 2017 Exclusive Kit and the Love You Journaling Tags!

Supplies | January 2017 Exclusive KitLove You Journaling TagsPuffy Heart StickersXO StickersAlways Acrylic HeartAll My Heart StampAcrylic Frosted HeartsValentine Banner Stickers

There are a few different elements that I try to incorporate in all of my projects: texture, dimension and contrast. Contrast is all over the place on this spread with the black and white photos. But the dimension and texture is more subtle.

On the red card, I added drops of white mist for more texture and to break up all that color. On the “Love You” multicolored tag from the Love You Journaling Tags, I added texture by stitching using white thread. It’s tone and tone and subtle.

For dimension, I adhered the red tag using dimensional adhesive. I also added the  Always Acrylic Heart, which is a few millimeters thick. Lastly, I stamped directly onto the bottom photo using Staz-on Ink to amp up the graphic feel to the spread.

The color scheme ended up being really fun. I’m not sure that I’ve used red, purple, yellow and teal together before. It was a great twist on a traditional love/Valentine-esque color scheme. Also, I’m just mega pumped that Elle’s included purple in the last few product releases. I love it!
