Thankful Week: Thanksgiving Hostess Gift with Wendy Antenucci

Family togetherness, memory-keeping and gratitude just go hand-in-hand, and today design team member Wendy Antenucci is with us to share how she is going to record them all with a special gift for her Thanksgiving Day hosts! We know you will love this idea, so instead of another scented candle hostess gift, whip out your Elle’s Studio supplies and take a cue from Wendy’s project. Let’s take a look!

Hello everyone, it’s Wendy here today with Thanksgiving hostess gift idea to share with you! I thought it would be really neat to create a gratitude journal to be used at my family event on Thanksgiving day to add a special photo from each guest or to serve as a place to record something each person is grateful for. Thanksgiving is a time for family and memories, so I thought this would be the perfect addition to our family Thanksgiving as we head to my grandparents’ house.

Supplies | October 2019 KitHoliday Puffy Stickers Autumn Puffy Stickers, Home Sweet Home 6 x 6 Paper Stack, Everyday Tabs Stamp, Stanley Jr. Alphabet Stamp

I started with a small notebook, and covered it with the heart pattern from the Home Sweet Home 6 x 6 Paper Stack. The hearts were perfect for a gift from the heart! I taped the striped 3″ x 4″ tag from the October 2019 Kit to the front, leaving the top edge open, creating a pocket to slide in a gift tag for the hostess.

I used the Autumn Puffy Stickers to decorate the front of the book. They added a little texture, but not much bulk, and the perfect “counting every blessing” sentiment.

I recorded the kraft tag also with the Autumn Puffy Stickers, layered on a label stamped with the “thankful for you” sentiment from the Everyday Tabs Stamp.

On the inside of my book, I created an introduction page, which included the year, stamped with the Stanley Jr. Alphabet Stamp, the perfect size alphas for this book! The “Thanksgiving” word from the Holiday Puffy Stickers, “feeling blessed” phrase and falling leaves from the Autumn Puffy Stickers and “one day at a time” phrase from the Everyday Tabs Stamp finished off the page. I can’t wait to record our gratitude before we dig into our turkey dinner!

I hope this little gift has inspired you to take some sort of memory keeping book or album along with you for your Thanksgiving, so that the memories you make that day, and the gratitude you share with your loved ones will never be forgotten!

Thankful Week: Handmade Cards with Mary-Ann Maldonado

Is there any better way to show that you care than by creating something handmade? We think not, and Mary-Ann Maldonado is continuing our Thankful Week here on the blog with handmade cards, created to show love and appreciation, and celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday! Let’s see what she created.

Happy fall, friends! With this new season’s arrival, I wanted to make sure I used up all the leftovers I had from the Home Sweet Home 6 x 6 Paper Stack and the fall embellishments from the November 2019 Kit and add-ons.  If you blink, Christmas will be here and we miss fall, so, I want to take a moment to be thankful for my friends that want to gather for cookie baking, dinners, Friendsgiving or party hosting.

Supplies | November 2019 Kit, Tiny Holiday Blank Label Stickers, Wood Veneer Holiday Phrases, Holiday Puffy Stickers, Home Sweet Home 6 x 6 Paper Stack, Say Cheese Stamp

Bringing a homemade card to a friend who has spent days preparing for an event is the perfect way to thank them. With the November Kit, card making is easy!

Lets take a look at my first card, full of color! The Home Sweet Home 6 x 6 Paper Stack was just what I needed for my base. Paired with the leaf and acorn journaling tag from the November Kit and the “give thanks” strip from another journaling tag, I added the color I was hoping for.

The Say Cheese Stamp has everything you need to get someone to smile.  Sentiments, labels, photo details and a camera can be added to any project to add detail. I layered the stamped camera with dimensional adhesive and a yellow Tiny Holiday Blank Label Sticker.  I added a touch of twine and the perfect Wood Veneer Holiday Phrase.

My second card is clean, classic and simple. The perfect sentiment and theme is all you need!

I layered two patterned papers from the Home Sweet Home 6 x 6 Paper Stack to add an eye-catching layer on the left, then used foam adhesive to add dimension behind the white cardstock. The pumpkin pie from the Holiday Puffy Stickers and “seconds, please” Wood Veneer Holiday Phrase are what made this card come together. The only thing missing is a large comfy couch for a nap after a big family or friend meal!

Get out those scraps from your Home Sweet Home 6 x 6 Paper Stack while we are still in fall-mode and create some fun, homemade cards that will wow your host! Keep it simple or layer it up: Just get crafting my friends.

Thankful Week: Tips for Scrapping a Grateful Grid with Stephanie Grimes

Yesterday, we saw how guest designer Meg Gundlach documented her Thanksgiving holiday in pockets using our new November 2019 Kit and add-ons, and today we’re switching gears from the holiday to the gratitude that we focus on this time of the year with Steph Grimes! Let’s take a look at what she is most grateful for!

Hello friends! I am so excited to be sharing my project with you during Thankful Week on the blog. I have worked over the last few years to cultivate a strong gratitude practice that I follow all year long, not just in November and around Thanksgiving. Part of that practice is writing about and documenting my gratitude. That’s what this layout is all about.

I knew right away that I wanted to make a layout celebrating my gratitude for my husband. I am grateful for him every single day, but lately he has been going above and beyond for me and I wanted to recognize that. (Scrapbooking is my love language!)

I know I’m not the only one short on time, especially as we head into the holiday season! So I wanted to come up with a project to document some of my grateful thoughts in a fast way. This project, including printing my photos, took me only 20 minutes! I could hardly believe it myself. Here are a few tips for how I pulled this together so quickly:

Supplies | November 2019 Kit, Tiny Holiday Label Stickers, Home Sweet Home 6 x 6 Paper Stack, Everyday Tabs Stamp, Say Cheese Stamp, Winifred Alphabet Stamp

Work in a grid. Initially, I thought that I wanted to use a pocket page for this layout, but didn’t have one in the right configuration for the supplies I wanted to use with my photos, and I definitely didn’t have time to break out my Fuse tool, so I decided to just make a 12” x 12” grid page to accommodate the sizes of supplies and photos I wanted to use. For this grid, I chose a simple 3-column design based on the size of my photos and journaling tags.

Keep your page elements the same size. I chose three of my favorite recent photos of my husband and I together and printed them all at 4” x 6” to make up one column of my grid. That column was then DONE, and took up half my page! I had already chosen my journaling tags from the November 2019 Kit, all in 3” x 4” size, and knew that the other two columns of my grid (or other half of the page) would have to be 3” x 4” spots.

Paper punches make great fast embellishments. I don’t use my punches nearly as much as I’d like to, but I knew they would help me fill the spaces in between my journaling tags on this layout. I used a heart punch with the heart pattern paper from the Home Sweet Home 6 x 6 Paper Stack. I also stamped out the “You & Me” phrase from the Say Cheese Stamp and then punched it out with a fancy label punch to add to my hand-cut tag. To make the tag, I simply used an old Elle’s Studio tag from a previous kit that I had in my stash as a template for the green patterned paper in the Home Sweet Home Paper Stack

Add dimension for visual interest. Since this was such a flat layout, I used pop-dots behind half of the elements to add some much needed dimension. You could also use chunky embellishments instead of creating yours from paper to add dimension.

Keep your embellishments to a minimum. The element of this page that took me the most time was stamping out my title using the Winifred Alphabet Stamp. Other than that, I kept things really simple and that always makes for fast scrappin’! I added a few Tiny Holiday Label Stickers and stamped on one journaling tag with a sentiment from the Everyday Tabs Stamp. One final touch was a heart from this month’s die cut sheet and then I called it finished!

Work from a single kit. This is actually a HUGE tip! Working from elements in the same kit or same product line makes fast work of any project. The hard work of picking coordinating elements has already been done for you by the designers! All you have to do is add your photos and personal style and you can make fast work of your scrappy to-do list.

What’s your preference? Do you like to move quickly through your work and make fast decisions or savor the process and move a little more slowly?  I hope this provides some inspiration on making attractive layouts in a short amount of time. I’d love to see some of your quick creations using this month’s kit! Be sure to share on Instagram using the hashtag #ellesstudio so we can all see your awesome projects!

Thankful Week: Thanksgiving into Christmas with November Guest Designer Meg Gundlach

This week is a special one here on the ES blog! Not only do we have brand new kit inspiration to share with you all week, this week is Thankful Week, where our design team will be inspiring you to document not only the upcoming (or past, if you’re in Canada!) Thanksgiving holiday, but the things we are most grateful for in life!

Today, we are so excited to welcome our final guest for the year 2019, Meg Gundlach, also known as @travelscrapsleeprepeat, to the blog! Meg’s pockets are always FULL of adventure, color and bold designs, and we thought that our November kit and add-ons would suit her style perfectly! We think you will agree! Let’s take a look at her first project this month

Oh my goodness, I can’t believe that it is already November and time to start planning Thanksgiving again! When I think about this time of year, mint and pink are not really the colors that automatically spring to mind. However, when I looked at the photos in my 2018 album, it was clear that in a lot of ways I had already moved into the winter and Christmas season. The November release is so perfect for this transition period, as the colors and elements coordinate beautifully with both the October 2019 Kit and the Document December products. By mixing in the darker toned elements with the pastels, this page suits the feel of that week exactly!

I have kept a weekly(-ish) pocket page album for almost a decade and weeks that include a holiday are always a favorite. Some holidays have enough material for a full spread, some get incorporated into the week, and I don’t worry at all about how I have approached this in the past or will in the future. Thanksgiving 2018 fit neatly within the weekly spread and it was so satisfying to pull it out and get those memories recorded. The Let’s Eat Stamp is obviously my spirit stamp because if Thanksgiving wasn’t food oriented enough, I also had food pictures from earlier in the week. “Good food & company” is definitely my motto and the perfect way to start this spread.

The small repetitive icon stickers are always the first I pull from a puffy sheet. This is in no small part due to my obsessive repetition of the label/phrase/sticker formula, which I probably use every two to three pages. Already an absurdly easy technique, the Tiny Holiday Label Stickers made it even easier as they come pre-printed with appropriate sentiments.

Having worked almost exclusively on a 12″ x 24″ canvas for so long, my main priority is finding balance across the spread. Thus, almost everything you have seen on the left page of this spread also appears on the right. The label/phrase/sticker combo appears four times, plus a variation on the title and Thanksgiving cards. One super easy way to force balance on a layout is to use a sticker alphabet, like the Jane Alphabet Stickers that I used here, to add bold captions to journaling tags or photos. The key to repetition is that it should be similar, but doesn’t have to be exactly the same. By spreading the range of colors, elements, or even techniques (i.e. stamping on photos) across the layout, you can maintain a clean and polished look while also using a large number of the amazing products you love!

Confession time: The absolutely last thing I did to this page was stamp the tiny star from the Let’s Eat Stamp as the bullet points on the wine tasting list. And I hated everything about it. It was just way too much for that card! Rather than admit defeat and throw it out, I went through my stash of fabulous Elle’s puffy stickers until I found the white dots in the Christmas Shapes and Dots Puffy Stickers to cover all the stars. Now the bullets points are super subtle, but add some interesting dimension. Everyone makes mistakes, but some of my favorite cards are born out of necessity. I will definitely be using this list design again!

Hi! I’m Meg but you may know me better online as TravelScrapSleepRepeat. Born and raised in Wisconsin, I moved to the United Kingdom in 2006 for grad school and have been roaming ever since. Shortly after arriving in Wales I met my partner Ken and since we both work in archeology/cultural fields, we have the opportunity to travel a lot. In between these adventures I print my photos and play with pretty things. I will never be ‘caught up’ and I’m totally cool with that—always chasing the next experience!

Be sure to follow Meg for more pocket page inspiration at her blog and her Instagram feed, which we know you will love as much as we do, and stay tuned for more inspiration from Meg’s album using the November 2019 Kit and add-ons!

Make No Mistakes with Kristina Proffitt

Using up the scraps from you last kit before your new kit arrives can be a fun challenge, and today Kristina Proffitt is with us to share how she turned what seemed like mistakes into a beautiful autumn layout using her scraps!

Lately I’ve been loving not only using photo strips on my layouts, but I’ve also been loving using up my scraps from past kits. I’ve joined both and the layout I am sharing with you today uses two photo strips, as well as scraps from the October 2019 Kit and add-ons, but honestly, you can’t even tell that they’re scraps, can you?!

Supplies | October 2019 Kit, October Labels, Wood Veneer Leaves, Autumn Puffy Stickers, Everyday Tabs Stamp

The green tab that I stapled above the top left photo strip is actually one that I cut out from a 3″ x 4″ journaling tag in the October 2019 Kit. I had actually stamped on it, messed it up and didn’t want to waste it, so I cut out the tab element from the tag. Cutting out elements from journaling tags is a great way to not only repurpose them, but to save them if you’ve messed up the journaling, changed your mind, or like me, goofed up when you stamped something onto them! I love the look of the tab with the stamped date for this layout.

The super cute leaves and acorn patterned strip that you see on the right side of the layout is actually also cut from a journaling tag in the October 2019 Kit. I thought it would be the perfect little touch of pattern next to my photos and I just love the way it turned out. Not only can you cut out shapes from your journaling cards, but you can also cut out patterns from them. The journaling tags in each kit are seriously SO versatile and fun!

And lastly, the “GOOD TIMES” on the layout was also cut from a 3″ x 4″ October Kit journaling tag that I once again messed up on! Ha! Friends, I’m not kidding. It bums me out to handwrite journaling and misspell something or forget a word. Thankfully, I was also able to salvage that card by using that sentiment on this layout.

Remember, just because you mess up on a journaling tag, that does NOT mean you can’t use it on your project somewhere! I challenge you to dig through your scraps and not throw away those cards that you “messed up” on. They can become some great design elements on your page! Put those scraps to work for you!

Winifred Two Ways with Patricia Roebuck

Halloween has passed, but that does not mean that the Winifred Alphabet Stamp has to sit on your shelf until next Halloween! Today, design team member Patricia Roebuck is with us to share how you can use this playful, yet modern alphabet to record a special moment in a traveler’s notebook! Let’s take a look!

I hope you have enjoyed working with the October 2019 Kit and add-ons as much as I have, especially the new Winifred Alphabet Stamp! The size is great for creating long titles, and the font has enough whimsy to it, but still has a clean, modern look to it as well. Today I am using it in my traveler’s notebook two ways: to create a title and to add to or accent my journaling by creating a collage.

Supplies | October 2019 Kit, October Print and Cut Labels, Autumn Puffy StickersHalloween Puffy Stickers, Wood Veneer LeavesHome Sweet Home 6 x 6 Paper Stack, Winifred Alphabet Stamp, Everyday Tabs Stamp, Everyday Tabs Metal Die, Mini Dated Stamp

I first stamped the Winifred Alphabet Stamp letters onto plain, smooth white cardstock to heat emboss in black so I could then add watercolors over the stamping. Next I chose the A, B, and C to cut using the Everyday Tabs Metal Die because I wanted to combine those alphas with sentiments from the Everyday Tabs Stamp sentiments that went along with my photos and journaling.

I started with a separate piece of cardstock to use as the background to insert into my TN after the page is finished.  I stacked and stitched October 2019 Kit tags along the right, trimmed, then took the leftovers and stacked and stitched them to the left, creating a nice collage. To add to that collage, I pulled in the ‘adventure,’ big smiles,’ and ‘celebrate’ sentiments from the Everyday Tabs Stamp to add in the same colors as the tags along the empty center of this page.  Building on the collage, I stamped 1, 2, and 3 from the Winifred Alphabet Stamp for each row of color, and stitched both sets of my finished tabs, facing each other on the rows.

Once my page was finished, I adhered it to the left side of my TN.  For the right side, I created directly onto the page: first, by placing my photos, then stamping “Be Brave” with the Winifred Alphabet Stamp in a light gray ink and the date in a dark gray ink for my title and to frame my photos.  Repeating the colors from the left side, I also used the October Print and Cut Labels to type my journaling and adhere with dimensional adhesive.

To continue repeating the left side design and colors, I trimmed the Home Sweet Home 6 x 6 Paper Stack in shades of orange and added stitching to create a mat for my second photo. After adding a few coordinating colors of die cuts from the October 2019 Kit, I then finished the left side with a few choice Autumn and Halloween Puffy Stickers and a Wood Veneer Leaf.

Two ways to use the Winifred Alphabet Stamp:  add a title and date using two different shades of the same ink color; or accent your journaling by creating a collage along with the Everyday Tabs Stamp and Metal Die. I hope you give this a try on your next project!
