Hugs & Kisses with Guest Designer Tazhiana Gordon

Hello Elle Studio readers! It’s Tazhiana, and I’m back with my second project for this month. I hope you enjoyed what I shared last week in my first post, and I think you’re going to get a kick out of this one!

One of my favorite parts of working with Elle’s products in general is how many color palettes and moods you can create from a single box! My last layout felt very green and blue, so I went to the opposite end of the spectrum and played with reds and pinks for this page, which was a perfect color palette for scrapping this photo of my cat, Minerva, and I. She’s my favorite scrap buddy and I had to document how much I love that monster. I knew the second I saw the Love Is 6 x 8.5 Paper Stack that I had to create a layout making the patterns the star so that’s where I started. I chose four patterns, tore them at an angle, layered them on top of each other and a white cardstock 9″ x 12″ background, and then stitched a border around my page using a zig-zag stitch and red thread. I love how the pop of red adds a bit more color and the ripped patterned papers made such a fun element at the top of the page.

Next, I went to work on the rest of my layout. The January 2020 Cut Files this month are so much fun and I could not resist the sweet heart files! I cut them from the red and pink patterns from the Love Is 6 x 8.5 Paper Stack and then I cut them again on vellum, both to soften the colors of the hearts so they blend a bit more into the background and also because vellum is a cool texture to play with! It adds a bit of whimsy and a dreamy quality when it’s used in large quantities like it is here. I didn’t want to stick the vellum all the way down because I liked the texture it adds, so I just attached it with a single staple. I also cut my title on the same red pattern while I had my machine on and the paper loaded onto my mat.

Once that detail work was finished, I went to work on embellishing my layout. I first matted my photo using multiple patterns from the Love Is 6 x 8.5 Paper Stack, making sure to have a ripped edge on at least one side to repeat that torn element from the top layers. Next, I decided to take a huge risk and play with the Love You Lots Stamp. I am not the best at stamping, but the set was just too cute not to use and I was armed with a Misti so I figured I could make it work! I used a woodgrain journaling tag from the January 2020 Kit and stamped out a banner and sentiment on the top of the card, then layered hearts on the body of the card using Memento Chalk inks. The colors matched the papers perfectly—it was a match made in heaven! After heat setting the inks, I added my journaling on the tag and went to work on wrapping the layout and the embellishments up.

I grabbed the You Are Loved Die Cuts and pulled out labels and hearts to add to the top of the photo cluster. I used a few Little Moments Leatherette Stickers to add a banner with a sentiment as well as a circle sticker to repeat the grey color that popped up in my background. I like to repeat colors to tie a layout together—it makes the whole thing feel a bit more cohesive. After adding the die cuts and the stickers, I stuck down my title using some glue and then sprinkled some La La Love You Puffy Stickers around the page to add a bit more color and texture. Puffy stickers feel like the cherry on top of a sundae, and they’re my favorite accent at the very end of a layout. After a few hearts, I called the layout good!

I hope you enjoyed this layout that I created using the Love Is 6 x 8.5 Paper Stack, the Love You Lots Stamp and the January Cut Files, and I hope that you found some inspiration here. This page was super easy and so much fun to make! If you want to see how it all came together, I created a process video, which you can watch here:

Cheers till next week!

Hi! I’m Tazhi and I’m a 29 year old crafter from Brooklyn, NY. I live with my husband and two kittens, Astoria and Minerva.

I discovered the whole idea of memory keeping a few years ago and always kept albums of photos throughout high school. It wasn’t until August of 2016 that I stumbled onto the memory keeping community on Instagram and plunged headfirst down this rabbit hole. Since then, I’ve added different mediums to my repertoire and I think I’ve finally developed a personal style. I love just about all mediums this hobby has to offer, from pocket pages to large traditional scrapbooking. I think there is deep, deep value in telling your own story and not letting someone else tell it for you, and that is what keeps me attached to the glue and the paper and the stickers. When I’m not making, I’m drooling over what other people are making, writing or listening to music. It’s an absolute joy to be able to share my stories with you!

Tazhi’s will be back with her final project next week, but until then find more of her work at her links below:
