Working with the July kit with Jill Sprott

It’s the height of summer, something that the July kit from Elle’s Studio makes apparent with its bright and bold hues. A summery kit, however, need not be used only to create summery projects. I paired the July kit with the Sunny Days collection to document a fond food memory from my childhood.

The layout design is relatively simple: it’s asymmetrical, with four quadrants as its focus: a photo, a title block. a large (camera) accent, and a journaling block. All four blocks include layers of tags and papers from the July kit and Sunny Days collection.

To create a sense of unity, I overlapped the sections and added a stitched garland across the blocks. Garlands are always simple to make and fun to include on pages. I ran die-cut shapes and vellum hearts through the sewing machine, feeding each one under the needle piece by piece, alternating colors and sizes along the way.

There is stitching elsewhere on the layout as well — over the series of hearts on a tag and across the letter stickers in the title. I often work with threes on my pages, incorporating visual triangles.

The bright summery hues in the July kit and Sunny Days collection may not have been used on a typical summery page in this case, but they work so well here all the same, drawing out the colors from the photos and helping me to document a memory of a food that I love regardless of the season.
