Sketch-Inspired Pockets with Meg Gundlach

Hi friends! It’s Meg here to celebrate the release of From Sketch To Finish Vol. 6 and share a little about how I use sketches for my pocket pages. I’ve never really been a scraplifter that wants to exactly reproduce a page; often it’s a technique or combination of products that grabs my eye. To the great frustration of pretty much any creative course I’ve ever taken, I instead revel in using the individual pieces and making something totally different. I have always loved the abstract way that a sketch makes my thoughts start rolling and all the possibilities that they present.

Supplies | June 2021 Kit, June Labels, Vacation Details 4 x 6 inch Journaling Tags, Navy Parker Acetate Alphabet Stickers, Good Times Paper Stack, Celebrate Summer Stamp, Weekend Stamp, Knockout Words Metal DieFrom Sketch To Finish Vol 6 – digital class with physical stamp

When working in pocket pages, a lot of the design choices have already been made and it may seem like there is little to be gained from a sketch—not so! Rather than focusing on the overall design, I’m able to hone in on all the specific details that can be replicated to any scale or distributed around the spread. With this in mind, I opened my shiny new printout of From Sketch To Finish Vol. 6 to see what piqued my interest. I made it all the way to Page 1…and here we are. So, if you have the digital class flip open to Page 1 and see if you can spot what I was vibing. If not, come along anyway as we walk through the details of my spread.

Right away, this sketch invited me to make a page involving a list. Lists make me think of tours, where I often like to label a variety of sites across the spread. The repeated use of hearts and ‘love’ themed stamps drew me to my anniversary trip to Paris. Because that was a weekend away, I could also pull in some of the elements from the June Kit and new Weekend Stamp. All of these thoughts jumped out by opening the cover and turning to Page 1. That’s when you know things are getting good!

The easiest way to dive right into the sketch was through the title tag. Here I replicated the stacked words and stamped bullet points, both of which were easily scaled to pocket size. In place of a third level I pulled in the Weekend Stamp—‘together this weekend’ was the whole point of the trip!

Within the sketch, the majority of the writing is intended to be placed in the list. I had a little more to say and the Vacation Details 4 x 6 inch Journaling Tags are a product that just keeps giving. I only had a 3 x 4 inch pocket available, but it was a simple matter to cut the tag in half. I would happily use these tags on every single page I make.

I decided to break down the list as it was designed and instead stamp/print directly onto the individual photos. Each cluster has a different combination of stamps as suggested in the sketch. Because the ‘love’ theme worked great for the spread I was making, I followed it pretty closely but I’m already planning ways to reuse this technique mixing in a whole variety of Elle’s stamp themes.

The final element pulled from the sketch was the combination of the Knockout Words Metal Die and the faux stitching stamp from the From Sketch To Finish Vol. 6 Stamp. A small scrap of vellum underneath separated the knocked-out heart from my busy photo and I stapled through the stitching because I simply can’t help myself. Though this piece only appears once in the sketch, I had a bigger canvas to work with so I repeated it on either side. I also used the stitched stamp similarly with the ‘hello weekend’ die cut from the June Kit to tie (stitch?!) it all together.

Guys, I only made it to Page 1 of From Sketch To Finish Vol 6 and I am already overwhelmed with inspiration. My printout is so full of sticky notes that it looks like I’m studying for an exam! I would love to hear which sketches you have adapted to other memory keeping formats and please keep using the #ellesstudio hashtag so we can check them out!

See what creative possibilities are in store for you using our newest self-paced sketch class, From Sketch To Finish Vol. 6!

A Rainbow of Summer Color with Aimee Mertell

Hello Elle’s Studio friends! It’s Aimee here with a bright and fun 9 x 12 inch pocket page to share with you all featuring the new June 2021 kit and add-ons

Supply List: June 2021 Kit, Summer Label StickersAcetate Star Stickers, Celebrate Summer Stamp

I recently went out and purchased the kiddos—and who am I kidding—MYSELF! some summer play equipment. The kids got scooters and my husband and I chose skateboards. I of course snapped a few photos of us having fun outside and love the way the June Kit compliments their summer vibe.

I used the Celebrate Summer Stamp to stamp out “Celebrate Summer” on the rainbow 3 x 4 inch tag that served as my color inspiration for the whole spread. To add pops of those purple hues, I added labels from the Summer Label Stickers in a triangle around the page.

To pull in some blue from the rainbow striped tag, I added blue Acetate Star Stickers. The “This Weekend” checklist tag from the June Kit was a perfect for the page and I marked the most appropriate selection—play all day!

I then decided to make my own journaling tag using the Celebrate Summer Stamp—okay you caught me, there is one exactly like this in the June Kit, but I may have made an oopsie on it! Have no fear, though, because it can easily be recreated with the stamp set! I selected a beautifully coordinating cranberry ink and repeat-stamped the “collecting adventures” circle in the corner of my blank 3 x 4 inch cardstock piece and then adorned it with a yellow arrow and an orange label, again to pull those rainbow colors all around the spread.

This layout just screams summer and I’m in love with its vibrant colors. How many colors do you typically use on one layout? I challenge you to use a rainbow of color on your next project and see just how fun it can be. Until next time, happy creating!

For the Love of Art with Jody Compton

Hello! It’s Jody joining you on the blog today! Now that Elle’s Studio has three different colors of the Parker Acetate Alphabet Stickers, it is time to show them all off! I created a 12 x 12 inch layout of my youngest enjoying an art moment at the local art center, featuring a fun radial design!

Supplies | June 2021 Kit, June 2021 Cut Files, Jane Tile Alphabet Cardstock Stickers – Light Teal, Jane Tile Alphabet Cardstock Stickers – Yellow, Jane Tile Alphabet Cardstock Stickers – White, Jane Tile Alphabet Cardstock Stickers – Black, Yellow Cardstock Label Stickers, Acetate Hearts, Acetate Stars, Navy Parker Acetate Alphabet Stickers, Yellow Parker Acetate Alphabet Stickers, Teal Parker Acetate Alphabet Stickers, Good Times Paper Stack, Mini Dated Stamp

For this project, I used smooth, white cardstock for the background that I sent through my cutting machine. I enlarged the sun die cut from the June 2021 Cut Files to about 10 x 10 inches, die cut it from the background, then added a smooth yellow cardstock to back the die cut to create a bright background!

I searched for a quote that would express my son’s love of art, and found a great one from Harvey Fierstein. I did have to shorten the quote to fit my space, but the short version is still powerful and relevant.

To keep the circular element going, I added the quote in several different alphas. To help all the Parker Acetate Alphabet Stickers stand out, I used the smaller Jane Tile Alphabet Cardstock Stickers in white, light teal, yellow, and black for the connecting words.

I used several of June 2021 Kit die cuts to embellish my layout. Lastly, I added a few lines of typed journaling, expressing our gratitude for the art center.

Thank you so much for stopping by today, and I hope you’ve been inspired to create a fun title with the Parker Acetate Alphabet Stickers. Remember when using Elle’s Studio products to use the hashtag #EllesStudio when posting to social media, or share in the Elle’s Studio Facebook Group so we are sure to see your amazing work!

Weekend Life Documented with Marsha Farris

Hey, Elle’s Studio friends!  It’s Marsha, and I’m happy to be here today sharing a pocket page layout featuring the new Weekend Stamp. I love the variety of fun icons and phrases included in this stamp, and it is perfect for so many different types of projects!

Supplies | June 2021 KitJune Labels, Jane Tile Alphabet Cardstock Stickers – Navy, Good Times Paper StackWeekend Stamp, Large Jane Alphabet Stamp – Outline, Large Jane Alphabet Metal Die

For my layout today, I created a spread for my 6 x 8 inch album, using two different pocket page configurations. I love mixing different page sizes in my albums for variety and interest. I began the layout by printing four photos from a recent family weekend at the lake. I chose several journaling tags from the June Kit and arranged them on the spread, deciding the best placement for the photos and tags. I knew I wanted to do lots of stamping, so I selected several ink colors to coordinate. I began by stamping the repeated “thumbs up” circles using the Weekend Stamp and navy ink onto a striped journaling tag, which I then layered my photo onto. I also stamped the same circular image onto white cardstock, cut it out with a circle punch, and layered it over the photo. I love the interest this adds to the journaling tag using only stamps to embellish! Next, I used the star stamp from the same set to check off some of the boxes on another journaling tag.

To create the title card for my layout, I stamped a phrase from the Weekend Stamp onto another journaling tag from the June Kit using navy ink. I completed the title with the Jane Tile Alphabet Cardstock Stickers in Navy. I then stamped the word “LAKE” onto a yellow patterned paper from the Good Times Paper Stack using the outline Large Jane Alphabet Stamp and cut it out with the coordinating Large Jane Alphabet Metal Die. I continued using the Weekend Stamp to add the “this weekend rated” stamp and filled in the rating using a star stamp and light blue ink.

For the other page of the spread, I kept it really simple by layering two photos onto another journaling tag from the June Kit. I added machine stitching using white thread onto the sun rays for a bit of extra interest.

To finish the layout, I typed my journaling, printed it out on white cardstock, and trimmed it to fit the 4 x 2 inch pocket.  I added stamping with the Weekend Stamp and three ink colors, stamping Saturday and Sunday repeatedly above and below the journaling.

This layout came together so quickly using this stamp.  You don’t need many embellishments when you have a really great stamp set!

I hope I have given you some ideas for using the awesome Weekend Stamp! Be sure to share your projects with us in the Elle’s Studio Facebook Group or on Instagram using the #ellesstudio hashtag.  Happy creating!

This layout was inspired by Sketch 26a, one of the 50 never-before-seen sketches! Combined with the June kit and a few of the add ons, it came together quickly. I love the flexibility of these sketches as photos are designated, per se. With this particular sketch, I could have used one, two or three photos. I opted for a single 4 x 6 inch photo with the other two rectangular spaces being a 4 x 6 inch pocket tag and patterned paper that houses my journaling on a 3 x 4 inch pocket tag

In order to pop this amazing photo and give it the WOW factor it deserved, I converted it to black and white, allowing it to stand out against the contrast of the red and yellow of the neighboring pocket tags.

If you buy the class + stamp bundle, you will have even more ideas available to you from the sketches, as many of the sketches include the use of these amazing stamps! Elle’s Studio really does have some of the most versatile stamps around. Here, You can see a simple divided rectangle stamp used to include the location and date. I also used the “We always have fun” phrase stamp on repeat to create the thin border at the bottom of the page.

Another of the amazing stamps, the “you are golden” star, works perfectly with the My Star Metal Die and pairs really well with this month’s Acetate Star Stickers!

Celebrating a Grad with Jennie McGarvey

Hey, everyone! It’s Jennie McGarvey and I’m back today with something that I just love!

I love traveler’s notebooks for their size but also for the variety. Not only can I mix up the theme + content, but the size is a welcome change.

Supplies | June 2021 Kit, Yellow Cardstock Label Stickers, Treasure This Vellum Stickers, Stars and Stripes Chipboard StickersAcetate Star Stickers, Navy Parker Acetate Alphabet Stickers, Patriotic Acrylic Stars, Good Times Paper Stack

With all of the beautiful blue products found in the June 2021 kit and add-ons, it seemed fitting to create a graduation layout since the main school color was blue. However, I needed to add more than just blue! That’s where the leftover strip from the 3 x4 inch tag from the June 2021 Kit came in.

I was really feeling tags for this page. It felt pretty standard, not at all edgy, but a little bit playful. So, I took the 3 x 4 tag from the June Kit and trimmed the card and edges to create my own shipping tag!

I wanted to continue the tag idea AND finish it off with a third tag, so I did the same thing for the journaling.

Do you ever modify the products to have them fit your needs? What’s your favorite way to do it? I’d love to hear some new ideas, so share them with us!

Getting in a Monochromatic Mood with Katarina Prevendarova

Hi, friends. It’s Katarina here today with a brand new layout featuring the gorgeous June 2021 kit and add-ons. I really love all the navy blue elements in the June release so I decided to create a monochromatic layout focusing on all the blues, with pops of purple.

Supplies | June 2021 KitJune 2021 Cut Files, June Labels, Jane Tile Alphabet Cardstock Stickers – Navy, Stars and Stripes Chipboard StickersAcetate Star Stickers, Navy Parker Acetate Alphabet Stickers, Cork Labels, Patriotic Acrylic Stars, Good Times Paper Stack

I started by cutting the wave cut file and using it as a mask. I chose four hues of Distress Oxide inks. Using a stencil brush and my cut file mask, I blended them all together creating a nice wavy background.

I found two photos of sunsets above Lake Garda and the mountains that went perfectly together with the products I wanted to use. I continued with a lot of layering. I used patterned papers from the Good Times Paper Stack as well as journaling tags and die cuts from the June Kit and the June Labels to create lots of layers behind my photo.

To embellish my photos I used one of the Cork Labels, a chipboard star from the Stars and Stripes Chipboard Stickers and a couple of white acrylic stars from the Patriotic Acrylic Stars.

I always love to combine different fonts to create my titles. This time I used both navy alphabets from the June release: the Jane Tile Alphabet Cardstock Stickers and Navy Parker Acetate Alphabet Stickers. I split my title above and below my photo to add a bit more balance. I love to overlay the acetate alpha stickers a bit to create some more interest.

From both sides of my title I added circular acrylic stars and I used the fact that they have a star shaped hole to add two pieces of book binding thread, stapling them with dark blue staples and securing them in the back side of my layout. It reminded me of all the ropes used in the harbors on the lake.

I finished off by scattering lots of acetate, acrylic and chipboard stars in shades of blue and purple around my layout.

I love how it turned out! The June products were absolutely perfect to document our beautiful summer memories.

Documenting a Special Dad Day with Guest Designer Sharon Gurley

We are so very excited to welcome our June guest designer, Sharon Gurley, to the blog today! Sharon’s projects are beautifully designed and precise, and often leave us asking, “How did she do that!?” Well today, you won’t have to ask, because Sharon is here to share how she created a gorgeous traditional layout and pocket page spread using our June 2021 kit and add-ons that will inspire all of us, no matter what format you prefer! Let’s take a look!

Hi, crafty people! This is Sharon, and I’m thrilled to be a guest designer for Elle’s Studio this June!

Supplies |  June 2021 Kit, Cork Labels, Tiny Shapes and Dots Puffy Stickers – Cool Tones, Good Times Paper Stack, Weekend Stamp, Celebrate Summer Stamp, Mini Dated Stamp, Large Jane Alphabet Stamp – Outline, Large Jane Alphabet Metal Die

Have you ever had a single tag from a monthly kit inspire an entire project? This happened to me as soon as I saw the “Best Dad Ever” tag from the June 2021 Kit. The colors matched my husband’s shirt perfectly from our 2020 Father’s Day outing. It’s amazing how a small 3 x 4 inch tag blossomed into a 12 x 24 inch spread of a traditional layout with accompanying pockets.

Let’s start with the traditional layout. I was inspired by the November 2020 sketch Kristina Proffitt used which features a large photo and bold title. Knowing this, the “Best Dad Ever” tag wouldn’t stand out enough to be my title, so I moved it to the pocket side of my spread to become a subtitle. Next, I pulled in more colors from the Good Times Paper Stack to expand my color palette to include green and kraft along with the light and dark blues from the monthly kit. Don’t be afraid to cut your tags! That’s exactly what I did to include more light blue for my paper layers in my photo mat using the glasses 4 x 6 inch tag.

Tucking the left side of the ‘Q & A” 3 x 4 inch tag hid what wouldn’t work for my layout and transformed into a spot for the date and the beginning of my journaling. For my date, I found that the numbers from the Celebrate Summer Stamp work well with the Mini Dated Stamp, especially if you’re looking for thicker numbers. For my prominent title, I heat embossed the Large Jane Outline Alphabet Stamp in white and cut them out using the Large Jane Alphabet Metal Dies. These are the two most utilized Large Jane items in my stash! The rest of the finishing touches on my traditional layout came from the die cuts of the monthly kit, a stamp from the Weekend Stamp, and the Cool Tones Tiny Shapes and Dots Puffy Stickers.

Now let’s look closer at the other half of my project: the pockets! When I combine a traditional layout and a pocket page, I visually connect the two sides by using the same products and colors. The monthly kit and add-ons made this easy! I was able to use tags and die cuts from the June Kit along with a heart from the Cool Tones Tiny Shapes and Dots Puffy Stickers. To pull in more of the kraft color, I used a cork piece from the Cork Labels. I also brought in more of the dark blue and green by using the Good Times Paper Stack. Once again, don’t be afraid to cut up your tags to make a project truly yours. That’s what I did to customize the pocket in the upper right corner.

For this pocket, I started with the “This Weekend” tag and trimmed it to include just the checklist, since I was only documenting one day. To build it back up to a 3 x 4 inch tag, I cut strips of the green striped paper from the Good Times Paper Stack for the top and bottom. Next, I created an embellishment from the round Sunday stamp found on the Weekend Stamp. I popped it up using foam adhesive and placed it into a nook I created with a circle punch. What I love about this tag is that I can easily recreate it with the Weekend Stamp in any color for a future project.

Thank you for taking the time to look at the details of my project! Hopefully it’s inspired you to document with your June kit and goodies. Check back again in two weeks to see what I’ve created with more of the amazing June release!

Hi, I’m Sharon, and I love paper crafting! You’ll usually find me making cards, creating decorations, and scrapbooking in my craft cave (also known as my basement) in the Chicago suburbs. Even at a young age, I kept travel journals and took photos, so when I discovered Project Life in 2015, everything clicked into place. I’ve been documenting my life with my husband and two young children in pockets ever since. It’s truly my favorite crafty project of all time!
