Project Life Tuesday and a Giveaway

It’s Tuesday, and time for another Project Life post here at Elle’s Studio!   I am so enjoying putting together this album– I truly feel Project Life enables me to thoroughly capture our day to day activities.

This particular week documents October 10th-16th.  One thing I decided to do when first putting this album together was to not split up the weekend in the spread of the week, which means my week begin with Monday and ends with Sunday.  I believe any way would work, but this is what has worked best for my album.

I used quite a bit of Elle’s Studio product this week- among my favorites is the Layered Number Cut Out and the 3×3 Ledger Calendar.  Each of these items are wonderful additions to documenting the date or month in any Project Life album!

You may notice the small alphabet stickers that I use frequently in my Project Life album.  They are by Lily Bee Design’s ABC stickers and they are the perfect size for Project Life.  I love that you receive eight different colors on one ABC sticker sheet.  The alphabet stickers used here come from their Harvest Market Collection.

I included a 5×7 insert that was actually a card that came home from my daughter’s preschool.  This particular week they had a “Dad’s Night” at preschool that is a really special event for both of them.  My husband loved this little card she wrote but really didn’t have a place to store it (other than his desk drawer:).  Project Life is the perfect place to store these little items!  With tons of artwork coming home in backpacks these days, and I have found that Project Life is a pratical place to display our favorite pieces.

The winner of last week’s Project Life giveaway was #74- Rosann!  Congrats Rosann!  To claim your prize, please send us an email with the info below to info@shopellesstudio.com :

Make It Sunday – 10.23.11

My sister and her husband took their little boy to the pumpkin patch last week and she came back with some great photos. As soon as I saw the one above I said “I have to scrapbook that! I’ll take a 5 x 7”. Most of the time, when I scrapbook a photo of him, she ends up taking it home and adding it to his photo album, which is a really special treat for me, to be able to create something for him, that one day he’ll get to really enjoy… or his wife will 😉

Sometimes, if she gives me photos and I wasn’t their with them at the event or outing, I end up giving her the layout with no journaling on the journaling tag. That way, she can record the special moments and memories and then it’s like his mom and aunt both made it!

Here’s the steps on how I created this layout:
1. First I started with a 12 x 12 piece of kraft cardstock.

2. Cut tiny, about 1/4 inch tall, 12 inch long strips from a striped paper, I used American Crafts Night Watch, and glue one to the top and one to the bottom.

3. Cut a 6 1/2 x 7 3/4 peice from a polka dotted paper, I used Mischievous “Happy Halloween” from My Minds Eye. Use a punch to punch out some of the circles – I saw this technique on Waleska’s blog and just had to try it!

4. Now you’ll want to layer your 4 x 6 “Notes from October” Elle’s Studio Journaling Tag, with the polka dotted paper and 5 x 7 photo.

5. Create a little cluster of pennants by cutting out three from the Elle’s Studio Halloween Pennants and then one from a coordinating scrap of paper.

6. To finish it off I added the title “The Perfect Pumpkin” to the top with Prima’s alphabet stickers and some bats and a pumpkin with K&Co’s Spook-Tacular accents.

This Sunday’s giveaway features the two Elle’s Studio products used! We are giving away both the Halloween Pennants and our Spooktacular Autumn Large Journaling Tags.

Just leave a comment to be entered! We will draw the winner and post it with next weeks “Make It Sunday’ post. *Comments must entered by 11:59 pm on 10.29.11 to qualify for entry. One entry per person, please.

Congrats to last week’s winner:

Preserving Fall Leaves

Currently in the Midwest, the leaves are beginning to peak with their gorgeous fall colors. Every year I always find myself wishing I could “bottle up” the magnificent color to enjoy all year. Recently I found a tutorial from Martha Stewart on preserving leaves, and I knew I wanted to give it a try and include the outcome in my Project Life album. So, today I am going to share with you how I was able to preserve fall leaves!

First you will need some Bleached Beeswax. I used this brand by Enkaustikos, and purchased it through Amazon. Likely, you will be able to find some bleached beeswax at your local large craft store.
I placed 5-6 tablespoons of the Beeswax in a small sauce pan and very carefully heated it on low heat. (do not allow to boil).
Next you will dip the leaves in the melted wax by holding on to the stem. Coat the leaves with the wax and gently shake off the excess wax.
I placed the leaves on a sheet of tin-foil to dry. I would suggest hanging the leaves, as I experienced a few leaves sticking to the foil. I discarded the hot wax in a canning jar (do not pour down the drain).

The leaves will dry with a wax-y coat to it– perfect for preserving it’s color and shape. I tried this technique about 10 days ago, and the color still looks as bright as the day it fell from the tree.

Good luck and have fun preserving the gorgeous fall leaves!

Sketch Thursday – 10.20.11

Hello, everyone and welcome to Sketch Thursday! Today’s sketch is inspired by our September Inspiration Gallery’s Guest Designer Susan Weinroth’s layout! We just love Susan’s use of large photos, with clusters of embellishments and lots of journaling!

This sketch has lots of room for you to play around with it – you can use the bottom space for a photo like Susan did, or patterned cardstock – it’s totally up to you!
Let’s take a peek and see what our Design Team members did with the sketch:
Stephanie made a pocket to fill her space on the bottom and it looks like it includes some special keepsake papers, such a great idea! She also included photos at the top, like Susan did and we think it turned out wonderful!
Keshet used patterned paper to fill the bottom space and it turned out great! We also love her use of the photos on the top half, our circle tags to make a little embellishment cluster and her use of a border punch in the center!
Looking for an incentive to use our sketch this week? We can help with that! Post a link to your layout created using this Sketch Thursday sketch for your chance to win a $5 Elle’s Studio gift certificate. Link must be posted by 11:59p on Wednesday, October 26th, 2011.
Gift certificate can be used towards purchase of products only and can NOT be used for shipping charges. Gift certificate balance must be used in a single transaction.
