Five on Friday with Jen McMurtrey

Hello friends! It’s Jen today with the July edition of Five on Friday, where we are challenged to create a project using only five products from the July kit and add-on release. Sometimes less is more, right?

Let’s take a look at the finished 8 ½ x 11-inch layout:

Supplies | July 2022 Kit, Puffy Star Stickers, Medium Hazel Stamp, Star Notes Stamp, Star Notes Metal Die

The base of the project was created using white mixed media paper and distress oxide inks (Abandoned Coral, Scattered Straw, Cracked Pistachio, Salvaged Patina, and Faded Jeans). After using a plate and drawing a circle on the paper, I simply added water and inks until it was to my liking. This can sometimes be a bit of trial and error, so don’t be frustrated if you struggle when first trying it.

Once the background was dry, I used the Medium Hazel Stamp and stamped “vintage vibes” around the perimeter of the circle. I considered using black ink to do this but opted for the same distress oxide inks instead.

Next, I used the Star Notes Stamp with the same distress oxide colors to make coordinating embellishments. Since the stamps and Star Notes Metal Die create a solid star with lines for journaling, I decided to cut out the center of each large star in order to keep the mixed media background visible. This process was quick and easy with a straight edge and blade.

After cutting out the stars, I machine-stitched them atop the circle I’d previously drawn. Additionally, I added Puffy Star Stickers to the center of each to give them a bit more pizzazz.

From there, I added the photo and continued embellishing the layout using more stamped images from the Star Notes Stamp along with die cuts and journaling tags, fussy cut from the July 2022 Kit.

Last, I added journaling strips that I typed with my manual typewriter.

This layout was fun to make since I love using mixed media on projects, and I love how it turned out.

I hope you’ve been inspired today to use up those supplies, regardless of how much (or how little) you may have, and create projects you love! Remember to post your finished projects to Instagram using the hashtag #EllesStudio so we are sure to see them! Have a great day!
