Sketch Day with Michelle Flynn

Hi friends!  It’s Michelle here today sharing a layout using a new, fun Elles’s Studio sketch! I used the beautiful April 2021 Kit and add-ons to bring my layout to life with the help of this sketch. I was a 12″ x 12″ scrapbooker for 20 plus years of my crafting life before I started pocket page memory keeping. Traditional layout memory keeping has my heart, but I noticed without creating them regularly that the ideas didn’t flow as they had before. This sketch really helped inspire me to create a simple but sweet layout.

Here is my layout inspired by my own interpretation of the sketch:

Supplies | April 2021 Kit, Smile Cardstock Die Cuts, Acetate Heart Stickers, Cork HeartsSmile Wood Veneers

I typically always have the photos I want to use for my layouts ready before I dive into the products and I had a few photos of a trip to California with my daughter that I really wanted to make a layout with. I wanted the highlight photo to be of her dipping her keds into the sandy beach in California for the first time and not her toes! The sketch showed a larger photo as the base area in the layout, but I decided after looking at the sketch that I really wanted to use a 3″ x 4″ photo instead. That’s the beauty of a sketch—to inspire your own creativity and interpretation of the design! You might have even interpreted the base as cardstock and not necessarily a photo, so again using your own creativity with the help of a perfectly laid out sketch design.

I was immediately drawn to title header and footer in the sketch and I pulled out the Smile Cardstock Die Cuts, choosing two beautiful die cuts, “photo love” and “captured”. Once I chose my title, I pulled out the monthly April 2021 Kit to select three tags and a few of the die cuts from the April Kit. I distressed the pocket tags and arranged them in a manner that would emphasize the photo.

I then prepped my background cardstock with some tangerine watercolor splatter that I thought would flow nicely with the colors of the pocket tags that I had distressed. While that dried, I selected a few other embellishments. It was hard to choose just a few because this month’s add-ons are that beautiful! Those Cork Hearts seriously give me all the heart eyes! I also chose those adorable Acetate Heart Stickers and the “favorite” piece from the Smile Wood Veneer, which I positioned right in the upper middle of the photo, in the negative space. Lastly, I chose the Smile Wood Veneer frame to wrap up my embellishment selection.

Thanks so much for sharing your time with me today! As you can see, using a sketch is an amazing way to inspire your creativity whether you want to keep it simple, as I did here, or get more detailed! I really found that the sketch helped inspire me to create a sweet and simple layout without spending a lot of time overthinking a design or running into a creative block and a blank page.  These sketches are wonderful for any type of memory keeping whether it is a layout or a traveler’s notebook, and combine that with the amazing products from the April 2021 Kit and add-ons and your memories are beautifully documented!  I can’t wait to see what you create using the Elle’s studio sketch with all of the beautiful products in the shop!  Don’t forget to share your creativity using the #ellesstudio hashtag on Instagram and in the Elle’s Studio Facebook Group! Until next time, happy creating my friends!
