A Cool Color Scheme with Laura Hager

The month of January can evoke all kinds of images for those of us who live in the height of winter this month- snowmen, sleds going down a steep bank, or simply hills of glistening white snow. Typically, these images pair perfectly with cool tones: blues, turquoise and grey. Laura Hager used these cool tones in her January exclusive kit to document a recent winter trip with gorgeous snowy images. Let’s take a look!

Hey! Laura here! I don’t know about you, but I love January! It’s so refreshing and inspiring to reflect on achievements and create new goals. The January kit and extras are great, because they capture this wonderful time of year.

Living in Phoenix, AZ, I don’t get to experience snow very often. My boyfriend and I decided to drive up to Flagstaff to play in the snow for a day. The “weather report” card from the January Exclusive Kit was so perfect for documenting the snowy weather. I used the Dated Stamp set and Olivia Alphabet Stamp set to document the temperature on the card. There was several embellishments in the pretty cobalt blue color, so I decided to make that the main color for the layout, and it tied in perfectly with the blue tone of the mountains in the background of my photos.

Journaling is a big part of my albums, because I like to include all the details from my life. The pretty blue and turquoise 4″ x 6″ tag in the January Exclusive Kit was perfect for adding my journaling to this layout. I used the white Letter and Number Stickers to spell out the name of the city, then, I used my typewriter to type out my journaling onto vellum and attached it to the card.

My favorite add-on item this month is the Puffy Heart Stickers sheet. There are so many great colors and they are just so cute! I added a little cluster of them in the corner of my photo. I love the contrast of white snow with the bright blue hearts.

I had so much fun working with the January Exclusive Kit and the extra embellishments. All of the pieces are so bright and colorful, perfect for documenting the excitement of the New Year, and a day in the snow!

Memory Planning with Guest Designer, Jennie McGarvey!

As we’ve all experienced, daily life can get busy. That sometimes means that we have to put aside our creative time for “real life” activities like cooking dinner or working overtime to finish a project in the office. For those of us who have to have a planner to keep our life on track, but find that our time to create layouts is lacking, memory planning can be the key to getting the best of both worlds! This hybrid papercraft form puts journaling, photos and memorabilia in our planner pages, and our guest designer for January, the lovely Jennie McGarvey, is with us to share her memory planner pages from Christmas, using the ‘Tis the Season collection.

Hello! I am so excited to share with you the week of Christmas in my memory planner. My memory planner is where I combine planning in my Happy Planner® with memory keeping. I plan out our activities and appointments, plus add photos and other embellishments. It really combines the best of both worlds and I love the end result!

In addition to adding stickers and stamping to the planner pages, I also include pocket pages complete with decorative tags, such as the Double-Sided Journaling Tags from the ‘Tis the Season collection. I love the beautiful designs, and layering the various die cuts from the Tis the Season Bits and Pieces, washi tape, as well as the Tis the Season Puffy Stickers on top creates texture and fun!

Documenting 2017 Intentions with Tessa Buys

Many of us try to start the year off with a good intention, a resolution of sorts. Whether it is to read more books, or spend less time on your phone and more with your family, getting it down on paper can be the first step to achieving your yearly goal. Why not do that with a layout? Today, Tessa Buys is here to share her 2017 intentions with a beautiful page featuring the January 2017 exclusive kit and Little Moments collection.
Hello! Tessa Buys here, excited to share my first project as an Elle’s Studio design team member with you! Making a layout about my intentions/resolutions/one little word at the beginning of each year has become a long-standing tradition for me. When I saw the “anything is possible” 3″ x 4″ card in the January kit, I knew it would be the perfect title for my 2017 page.

I matted my photo and title card on the gray heart patterned 4″ x 6″ tag from the January exclusive kit. Directly beneath that arrangement is another 4″ x 6″ tag from the kit, which I used my typewriter and favorite pen to fill out. Inspired by the hearts in the kit, I cut the large striped heart from a 3″ x 4″ tag. I added coordinating paper to my background from the Little Moments collection to tie in the colors, and wound some unruly thread in matching colors underneath the “follow your heart” die-cut from the kit. The “do your best” tag was the perfect enthusiastic finishing touch to pull that cluster all together.

Last, I added one of my favorite elements of the layout, the 2017 Small Black Acrylic. It’s the perfect size, the perfect font, and I love that it comes in black and white! I used black here to offset all the white space and tied it in with some black paint splatters.

Celebrate (and Document) the New Year!

Happy New Year and welcome to the Elle’s Studio blog! We are so excited that you are here to ring in a new year with us. We have an amazing new design team to inspire you, a new blog coordinator, Meghann Andrew, to bring new projects to our blog, and a lot of fabulous product planned to help you document 2017!

To kick things off, Jamie Leija is here to share her new 2017 album title page with us! Let’s take a look.

Hiya, Jamie here and today I’m sharing the title page for my 2017 album. I don’t have a plan for my albums this year… or most years for that matter! I never have a set size in mind. I just make a page in whatever size I want and go from there. I love having so much flexibility to create what I want!

Supplies | December 2016 Exclusive Kit, 2017 Large White Acrylic, Celebrate Stamp, Dated Stamp, Acrylic Stars – Winter Mix, Sunny Days 6″ x 6″ Paper Stack

For this year’s title page, I created a 6″ x 12″ pocket page, simply because I thought it would be fun! I used a 6″ x 6″ square black and white photo that I took on New Year’s Eve. It’s the four of us: me, my boyfriend, our dog (you can see her ears at the bottom of the photo) and our cat. It’s not perfect, but it’s us.

I used the Celebrate stamp and white ink to stamp directly on the photo. I love that it gives it a graphic feel. And the black and white really makes those colorful journaling tags pop! I chose a 4″ x 6″ tag from the December exclusive kit and embellished with the large acrylic “2017.” To finish the page, I added two acrylic stars and a heart I cut out using my Silhouette.

Since there’s no telling when I might next make a 6″ x 12″ sized layout, I opted to create my own pattern for the back side of the page. I used the Dated Stamp and 8 different colors of ink to create the pattern. It took me a while since I switched up the colors a lot, but it was so fun to make and see completed! The dates that were outlined are some of the more important dates of our year—birthdays, gotcha days, etc.

Scrapbook and Cards Today Mini Album by Meghann Andrew

Hello there, and welcome to the Elle’s Studio blog today! I was so excited to contribute a mini album to the Scrapbook and Cards Today winter issue this month, and the ‘Tis the Season collection made creating it so fun and easy! I’d love to share it with you.

Supplies | ‘Tis the Season- 12″ x 12″ Paper Collection, ‘Tis the Season- 6″ x 6″ Paper Stack, ‘Tis the Season Stamp, ‘Tis the Season – Double-sided Journaling Tags, ‘Tis the Season – Bits and Pieces, ‘Tis the Season – Puffy Stickers, ‘Tis the Season – Cutouts, Malia Alphabet Stamp, ‘Tis the Season – Frosted Acrylic Shapes, and Letter and Number Stickers- Light Pink.

I had several photos to document from a Christmas celebration with my daughter and Goddaughters last year, and this 6″ x 6″ chipboard mini was the perfect size for adding 3″ x 4″ photos with a bit of journaling and embellishments.

To simplify the process, I kept the same layout for each page, using a piece of the Tree Trimming grid paper to cover each bare page, a 2″ strip of patterned paper from the 6″ x 6″ paper stack at the inside edge, then a colorful manufacturers strip from the 12″ x 12″ paper collection to cover the seam.

By mixing up embellishments and journaling tags, I was able to make each page look different and bring variety to the album.

I really wanted the photos to shine in this mini album, and in addition to color, I also used black and white prints when the colors became too overwhelming with the product.

To add a bit of embellishment to the spine, I created a tassel with a bit of embroidery thread and some beads. The ‘Tis the Season acrylic present and star were also perfect for dangling from my binding with some bakers twine.
