The layout she is sharing with us today is no exception—let’s take a look at how she used one of our bonus sketches from our latest sketch class to get creative!
Hello Elle’s Studio friends! It’s Marcia Dehn-Nix here. I pronounce my first name Mar-see-ah, as opposed to Marsha. I am so excited to be the guest blogger today, and a contributor to the awesome new From Sketch to Finish Volume 5 Class! Sketches are a great way to stimulate your creative mojo. When I saw this sketch, I saw rays of sunshine. Maybe I am just sun deprived after a long Minnesota winter. I love including suns on my spring and summer projects. For today’s layout, I chose to scrap some family BBQ photos. I miss my extended family. Quarantine has been hard and I can’t wait until we can have a family gathering like this again when it is safe to do so. My family likes to eat too. Look at all that food! On this occasion we were celebrating May and June birthdays and my husband’s college graduation (at 55!). You are never too old to go back to school!
Supplies | From Sketch to Finish Vol. 5 Digital Class with Stamp, May 2020 Kit, Life Right Now Stickers, Jane Alphabet Stickers — Black, Puffy Heart Stickers, Flourish 6 x 8.5 Paper Stack, Typewriter Alphabet Stamp
Using a stencil, Distress Inks, and an ink blending tool, I got to work and created my sun first. I stamped my title “Summer” using the Typewriter Alphabet Stamp and the same Distress inks. After fussy cutting out the alphas, I adhered them down over my sun. I think the white edging on the alphas helps them pop more against the inked sun, and I love that ombre look on the sun rays! For contrast, I used the black Jane Alphabet Stickers for the rest of my title. I love mixing fonts and colors to make my title eye-catching.
Once I had my sun inked on the background paper, I used pattern papers from the Flourish Paper Stack to ground my photos. 4″ x 6″ and 3″ x 4″ tags from the monthly kit also work well for adding layers!
This sketch included three photos, but I wanted to include some journaling, too. I opted to use the third photo spot to tell my story. The “all the details” journaling tag from the May 2020 Kit was perfect.
Next, I added Puffy Heart Stickers and Life Right Now Stickers for embellishment and extra interest. I got out the exclusive From Sketch To Finish Vol. 5 Stamp and stamped “happy day” three times under my journaling. One of the last things I typically add is machine stitching. I love the extra texture the stitching adds!
I think I am going to turn this into a double-page layout by duplicating the design on the right side, aside from the sun, since I have more photos from this family gathering that I want to scrap. That’s what awesome about sketches—you can easily manipulate them to suit your needs and spark your creativity.

I live in a suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota with my husband Steve. We are empty nesters now. Our three kids are all adults with jobs and fur babies of their own. Residing with us are our dogs Satchel and Princeton, and our cats Delta, Spook, and Xena. ( It seems I am a stray magnet and a local rescue foster failure!)
I started scrapbooking over 20 years ago when a friend dragged me to Archivers and then to other local scrapbook stores for scrapbook crop nights. I cringe at some of those layouts I created then—full of stickers! I create mostly 12″ x 12″ layouts. I love doing double-page layouts when I have lots of photos from an event. You will see me use lots of cut files, layers, and machine stitching on my layouts. Traveler’s notebooks are an awesome way to record thoughts when on the road and slip in photos later. I also have an obsession with box cards or any other 3D paper craft for that matter. I’ve also been known to make unique home decor pieces with cut files like signs, welcome rugs, pillows, and more.
The one crafty essential that I could not live without would probably be my Fineline glue bottle. It’s the best thing there is for gluing small, delicate items.
